Bignoniaceae are an important family of tropical trees and lianas.
Despite its horticultural renown, Bignoniaceae in general, and Tabebuia in particular are little understood phylogenetically.
Tabebuia is one of the largest genera of Bignoniaceae and is also one of the most widespread.

Plocospermataceae are shrubby plants that may be recognised by their rather small, opposite leaves that are articulated near the base of the petiole, and their quite large, polysymmetric, campanulate-rotate flowers with versatile, extrorse anthers and a twice-divided style.
Schlegeliaceae may be recognised by their woody habit, white bark, opposite, often thick leaves at least sometimes with small surface glands on the lower surface, large, monosymmetric flowers, and berries.
Paulowniaceae may be recognised by their opposite leaves and terminal inflorescences with large, monosymmetric flowers; the calyx is densely covered with brown indumentum.
