Bigotry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A bigot is a prejudiced person who is intolerant of opinions, lifestyles or identities differing from their own.
Bigot is often used as a pejorative term against a person who is obstinately devoted to their prejudices even when these views are challenged or proven to be false.
William Camden wrote that the Normans were first called bigots, when their Duke Rollo, who receiving Gisla, daughter of King Charles, in marriage, and with her the investiture of the dukedom, refused to kiss the king's foot in token of subjection, unless the king would hold it out for that purpose.

 Bigot - LoveToKnow 1911
BIGOT, one obstinately and intolerantly holding particular religious opinions, who refuses to listen to reason and is ready to force others to agree with him; hence also applied to one who holds similar views on any subject.
The origin is obscure; it appears in French, in the forms bigot or bigos, in the 12th century romance of Girard of Roussillon, where it is applied to certain tribes of southern Gaul, and in the Roman du Rou of Wace (d.
The meaning changed in French to that of "religious hypocrite" through the application, in the feminine bigote, to the members of the religious sisterhoods called Beguines.

 Dictionary of Canadian Biography Online
Bigot almost certainly had a share, too, in the company formed under Cadet’s name known as the Grande Société, which supplied food to the army, the garrisons, and the government in general from 1 Jan. 1757; and this company, a profit-making concern without check or hindrance, appears to have made great sums in various ways.
Considering that the ministry had chided Bigot as early as 1750 for the relatively small sums he was then spending in excess of the king’s accounts, we may imagine why the enormous demands of the later war years goaded the ministry to investigate and then to prosecute the intendant they held responsible.
Bigot may have cost the government something during the Seven Years’ War, but the cost was largely in paper credit notes that were subsequently reduced by more than half and merely added to the long-term debt, the debt that was to bring the crown to the brink of revolution.

Although this story is almost surely apocryphal, it is true that bigot was used by the French as a term of abuse for the Normans, but not in a religious sense.
Later, however, the word, or very possibly a homonym, was used abusively in French for the Beguines, members of a Roman Catholic lay sisterhood.
From the 15th century on Old French bigot meant "an excessively devoted or hypocritical person." Bigot is first recorded in English in 1598 with the sense "a superstitious hypocrite."

It is okay, contrary to popular modern beliefs of religious pluralism, to associate yourself with one particular faith which you believe is true, as long as you can back up your arguments and you understand where the others come from and how they contrast to your own.
Thus, to not be a bigot, you should read up on other faiths, compare them with your own, and allow yourself to think freely.
These are good questions that everybody should be asking themselves, and if you refuse to be a bigot and read up on the numerous religions of the world, you should be a step closer to deciding for yourself.
