The western half of the county is in the Pannonian plain, the eastern half is part of the Apuseni mountains.
Bihar was one of the oldest counties of the Kingdom of Hungary, formed before the 12th century.

When Mátyás was on the Bohemian battlefield with the troops of Bihar the Turks took the opportunity and attacked the fort under the leadershp of Ali pasha of Szendro on the 7th of February in 1474.
Many newspapers were edited: the Bihar in 1862, the Nagyvárad on the 3rd of July 1870 (the last one, the oldest Transylvanian daily paper, appeared till 1943), the Szabadság in 1875, the Tiszántúl in 1895, the Nagyváradi Napló in 1896 (Ady Endre became a collaborator of the editorial office).
On the 28th of August 1872 the Historical and Archeological Society of Bihar County was formed, that laid the bases of the museum in Bihar.
