Bijapur came under Muslim influence, first under Alauddin Khilji, The Sultan of Delhi, towards the end of the 13th Century and then under the Bahamani Kings of Bidar 1347.
In 1481, Mohammed III, one of the Bahamani Sultans, appointed Yusuf Adil Khan as the Governor of the Bijapur.

Bijapur has several other attractions besides, most notably a huge bell-metal canon (one of the largest forged anywhere in medieval times), the ruined Asar Mahal and the unfinished mausoleum of its last king, Ali Adil Shah II.

The one-time capital of the Adil Shahi kings (1489-1686) is dotted with mosques, mausoleums, palaces, fortifications, watchtowers and strong gateways, with the massive Gol Gumbaz dominating the landscape for miles around.
Said to have inspired the Taj Mahal in Agra, this palatial mosque and tomb in Bijapur is very impressive.
However, the jewel of Adil Shahi architecture is the Jami Masjid, with its graceful arches, aisles, halls, intricate designs and large crowning onion dome.
