  Bikini Island History
Bikini Atoll is one of the 29 atolls and five islands that compose the Marshall Islands.
Throughout the conflict the Bikini station served as an outpost for the Japanese headquarters in the Marshall Islands, Kwajalein Atoll.
It was in June of 1948 that the Bikinians chose Kili Island in the southern Marshalls because the island was not ruled by a paramount king, or iroij, and was uninhabited.

Bikini Atoll had been selected in late 1945 as the site for a number of tests of fission weapons, to experiment with different designs for the bomb and to test its effects on ships and the natural environment.
The primary culprit on Bikini was the radioactive isotope cesium-137.

Newsletter #60—Radiation: From Bikini Island to Long Island
Bikini had been an idyllic tropic island connected to others of the atoll by shallow submerged reefs, affording a plentiful supply of fish.
In the early 1970s three extended families returned to Bikini until reevacuated in September 1978, when their water and food supply was deemed contaminated with radioactive elements.
This means that all the water used by people living on Long Island lies, as in a pocket, under the land where they live, work, dump chemicals, apply pesticides, operate incinerators and nuclear facilities, and carry on the various activities of their lives.

Chapter 5 - Radiation: From Bikini Island to Long Island
This was an exercise in killing: "The islands were sprayed with DDT to insure healthful condition of the Task Force personnel" and "Rotenone [a pesticide toxic to fish] was placed in the current along the outer reef, and fish gathered in as they came to the surface," so that they might be identified and tested.
There are questions about Long Island's Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and other nearby nuclear facilities contributions to cancer in adults and children.
The release of radioactive materials into the air and water by BNL and the surrounding nuclear power plants, combined with wide-spread chemical contamination, are suspected to be significant factors in the breast cancer epidemic by the people living in Nassau and Suffolk counties of Long Island.

It is probably the most complete history of Bikini Island, and will continue to be a reference touchstone for future studies of the Marshall Islands and even the south Pacific.
Sometimes the pieces are highly interesting, such as noting that the two-piece bathing suit was named “bikini“ to capitalize on media interest in the atom-bomb testing; at other times, a sharp editor’s hand is missed, such as an out-of-place description of a search for a missing friend in Las Vegas, of all places.

Island Girl Bikini Jam - JAMAICAOBSERVER.COM
The event was the weekly Island Girl Bikini Jam competition at the Village Cafe - Liguanea, in which intrepid young ladies vie for the chance to appear at the grand finals, scheduled for May 12 through 14 at Hedonism III, Runaway Bay, St Ann.
Apart from strutting the stage in their costumes and then their bikinis, the young ladies are also quizzed on a number of topics and are asked to walk to a song and basically seduce the audience - no dancing or stripping allowed.
It was here that one previous winner, Karen 'Barbie' Miles, took top honours as she used her smile, lithe body and long hair (topped by a fedora) to lethal effect in winning over most of the crowd.
