Mary Anerley : a Yorkshire Tale eBook
The bilander was a good sizable object, and not to hit her anywhere would be too bad.
The poor old bilander had made herself such a hole in the shingle that she rolled no more, but only lifted at the stern and groaned, as the quiet waves swept under her.
The beach was swarming with men, who gave her a cheer, and flung their hats up; and in two or three minutes as many gangways of timber and rope were rigged to her hawse-holes, or fore-chains, or almost anywhere.

A close competitor to the Pink, the Bilander is a relatively small ship designed for light goods transport and escort.
Its has weak guns and small crew complement, and is best suited for short trade routes, and protective escort with mixed classes of vessels.
Its maneuverability and sailing characteristics are admirable, but its small size and light armaments are a liability for extended journeys.

 Bilander
A bilander, also spelled billander or be'landre, was a small European merchant ship with two masts, used in the Netherlands for coast and canal traffic and occasionally seen in the North Sea but more frequently to be seen in the Mediterranean Sea.
The mainmast was lateen[?]-rigged with a trapezoidal mainsail, but the foremast carried the conventional square course and square topsail.
They rarely reached a size of more than 100 tons.

Schulers Books (Mary Anerley - 56/103)
There were three craft, all of different rig--a schooner, a ketch, and the said bilander.
This vessel, though built for peaceful navigation and inland waters, had proved herself so thoroughly at home in the roughest situations, and so swift of foot, though round of cheek, that the smugglers gloried in her and the good luck which sat upon her prow.
They called her "the lugger," though her rig was widely different from that, and her due title was "bilander." She was very deeply laden now, and, having great capacity, appeared an unusually tempting prize.

Laurence, from my limited knowledge I believe that a bilander is simply a type of brigantine, so it is possible that the Thistle was both a brigantine and a bilander.
The bilander is a two-masted vessel that is square-rigged on the foremast and lateen-rigged on the mainmast.
Since the lateen sail is a type of fore-and-aft sail, the bilander would be a kind of brigantine.

The survey was performed by a group of Florida State University students as a class project and at the request of the Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary.
The site had previously been surveyed during the summer of 1985 as a Seacamp Archaeology Project and was thought to be the wreck of a bilander type vessel named Betty, a merchant vessel which sank in conjunction with H.M.S. Looe in 1744.
An extensive scatter of ballast rock was located at that time.
