In the News (Thu 16 Feb 12)

  Bilgeboard
A bilgeboard is a lifting foil used in a sailboat, which resembles a cross between a centerboard and a leeboard.
Bilgeboards are mounted between the centerline of the boat and the sides, and are almost always asymmetric foils mounted at an angle to maximize lateral lift while minimizing drag.
The bilgeboards are angled so that as the boat heels, or leans under the force of the wind, the leeward bilgeboard becomes more upright, and provides the greatest possible force in the desired direction.

If the plywood were actually damaged it would be necessary to remove the deteriorated wood and patch the space with layers of fiberglass to replace the missing structural wood.
Since the tapered bilgeboard fits a bit loosely in the bottom slot, it will be necessary to make allowances for this when the bilgeboard box is built.
Note: the bilgeboards in the plans are not tapered.

University of Wisconsin-Madison Hoofer Sailing Club C Scow Manual
Both bilgeboards are cocked at an outboard angle of 30 degrees so that the leeward board will be perpendicular to the water surface under normal sailing conditions.
The leeward bilgeboard should be about three-fourths of the way down, and the sail should be flattened as much as is necessary to prevent too much heeling.
It is generally faster to sail several broad reaches, and an accidental jibe leads to an almost certain capsize and the possibility of injury to the boat and its occupants.

Generally, when leaving a ramp under power, it is a good idea to lower the centerboard (read bilgeboard or leeboard) to limit sideslip while maneuvering in close quarters.
Bilgeboards are operated much like leeboards on the Sea Pearl or Dovekie.
The movement of the Bay Hen's bilgeboard also effects the location of the center of lateral resistance to some extent.
