Bill Berry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Berry was born in Duluth, Minnesota, to Don and Anna - their fifth child.
On October 30, 1997, three weeks after Berry had broken the news of his decision to retire to his closest friends, MTV were informed and duly dispatched a camera crew to R.E.M. HQ, where all four members of the band gathered for their last television interview as a quartet.
Berry's departure is cited by some fans as a trigger to the band's commercial and creative downfall.

...a way to make you smile... An R.E.M. fan site Bill Berry biography
Bill Berry was born on July 31st, 1958 in Duloth, eighty miles away from Hibbing, Minnesota, Bob Dylan's hometown (Bill, when asked, would tell he was born in Hibbing too - it was far more impressive to claim the same birthplace as the nation's unofficial Poet Laureate.
At the time, Bill felt the same horror of relocating in Georgia as would his future partner, Michael Stipe, but when the Great Lakes area took the brunt of the 1970's recession, the entire Berry family counted their blessings.
Bill Berry also grew up around music, his elder brothers and sisters purchasing all the latest hit records, his own tastes progressing fast - by the time he was eleven, he was a big Jefferson Airplane fan.

Bill Berry Shortcake Review By Dave Glackin
The deft, fluid, versatile cornet work of Bill Berry is variously coupled with sax, clarinet, flute, trombone, guitar, piano, bass and drums in quintet and septet combinations.
My favorite cut is one of the two Bill Berry originals, entitled "Bloose." This inventive, quirky, moody, loose piece showcases the phenomenal trombone playing of Bill Watrous, the virtuoso acoustic bass of Chuck Berghofer, the excellent piano work of Alan Broadbent, and the driving tenor sax of Lew Tabackin.
Bill Berry's virtuoso, quick, and sometimes spare cornet work is impeccable.

Bill demonstrated this with a simple jig on which he mounted a small chain to see how it would naturally sag at different widths.
Bill then worked down into the bottom of the bowl, changing to a curved shearing scraper to round out the bottom and remove turning marks.
Bill next reversed the work using a Jacobs' chuck, holding a small sanding disk (a jam chuck) in the headstock and a 60 degree cup supporting the bottom at the tailstock.
