Callahan was formerly the head coach of the Oakland Raiders in the National Football League.
During the 2002 and 2003 seasons, was the head coach of the Oakland Raiders of the NFL.

Callahan's meetings with Nebraska officials came only a week after he was fired by the Raiders following a 4-12 season, on the heels of a season capped by a Super Bowl appearance.
The 47-year-old Callahan, a seven-year NFL assistant who had no previous head coaching experience, was fired after a 4-12 season that was the Raiders' worst record since 1997 and the biggest fall by a team that had reached the Super Bowl the previous year.
Callahan, a former NAIA quarterback at Illinois Benedictine who earned $1 million a season as head coach of the Raiders, just completed the second year of a two-year contract, and Raiders owner Al Davis declined a series of one-year club options that could have kept Callahan in Oakland through the 2006 season.

Anytime you're a new coach and you're trying to instill a new attitude into a program and you get off to a bad start, the toughest challenge is to keep the team focused and believing that they can accomplish their goals.
This is by far the biggest non-conference game on the college football map in 2005, and I only hope that athletic directors and schools around the country take notice of the energy this match-up is creating and look for opportunities to recreate this atmosphere with their own programs.
A: Coach Willingham is taking over a program that has struggled in recent years because the talent level has dropped off, and fans will need to be patient while the current players learn to work hard and do the little things to win football games.
