Cardoso, a former editor of The Boston Globe Sunday Magazine who went on to write richly evocative articles for publications such as Esquire, Rolling Stone, Crawdaddy, and Ramparts, died of heart failure Feb. 26 at his home in Kelseyville, Calif. He was 68 and even though he lived most of his life in California, Mr.
Cardoso's father was an immigrant, born to an aristocratic family in Portugal; his mother was from New Bedford and was of Portuguese descent.
Cardoso was a good athlete and stayed passionate about sports throughout his life, cheering for the Red Sox and the Patriots from afar, said his one surviving brother, Gilbert, of Centerville.

Cardoso was the political reporter for the Boston Globe, according to the book's editor, and he introduced himself to Thompson by saying: "Hey, you're the cat who wrote the Hells Angels book." The two men then reportedly shared a joint, and a friendship began.

Bill will be memorialized this week as guy who coined "gonzo" to describe a 1968 article he had assigned Hunter Thompson to write for him at the Boston Globe Sunday Magazine on Nixon's primary campaign in New Hampshire, but I remember him for other reasons, beginning with the way he left us.
Bill was already in the bathroom, staking his territory by laying out the contents of his Dopp Kit on the sink and checking his "coif" (that's what he always called his curly Portuguese locks...his "coif"), so I opened the door.
Cardoso had the CITY car stashed in a garage in Daly City, and we drove over there with a recorder and taped a message from the car in the style of the dispatches issued by the SLA.

Bill Cardoso, a writer who coined the term "gonzo" to describe the frenetic participatory journalism practiced by contemporary Hunter S. Thompson, has died.
Cardoso died Feb. 26 of cardiac arrest at his home in Kelseyville, about 80 miles northeast of San Francisco, according to his longtime companion, Mary Miles Ryan.
Born in Boston, Cardoso began his journalism career as a sports writer for the Medford Mercury in the 1950s while a student at Boston University.
