The Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge is named for the eight-term Southeast Missouri congressman who helped lead efforts to secure funding for its construction.
Emerson passed away in June 1996 shortly before the contract to build the bridge was awarded.
Emerson's House and Senate colleagues unanimously passed legislation three days after his death to name the new bridge in his honor.

Bill: He was injured much worse than he thought so he was out of commission for a few months and he couldn't do anything.
Bill: You know, I'm not sure exactly what precipitated that, but he called me. At one point, I may have mentioned to him if he ever needed a banjo player to call me. He did call me to fill in at a gig in New Jersey when his banjo player had the mumps.

Here's a sampling of the last five years: along with songwriting master Pete Goble; Bill released two extremely well received hit albums as "Emerson and Goble" on "WEBCO Records of Virginia" in 1985 and 1988 acompilation of these and was re-released on the CD format as WEBCO Classics Volume One in 1995.
Bill has also recorded extensively on projects with Tony Rice and the Rice brothers over the last few years as well as producing recordings for artists such as Larry Stephenson, Jimmy Gaudreau, and Bill's latest protégé, Wayne Taylor.
Bill's latest project released in 1996 is "Bill Emerson, Banjo Man" featuring original and bluegrass standard instrumentals.
