Planet Drum the drummer's webzine - Reviews
This single CD combines a March, 1957, Jazz Messengers session with a 1961 quintet session led by Bill Hardman.
Hardman's playing is equally on display here, and rightly so, as evidenced by his use of repetition to melodic advantage in "Reflections," and his blazing runs during "Ugh!"
The 1961 Hardman session, his last as a leader until 1978, is a pleasant surprise, with "Capers" and Hardman's own "Jo B." lingering long after you've heard them.

McLean and Hardman exchange phrases note-for-note and measure-for-measure in the exciting and rapid-fire manner required by Blakey's demanding propulsion.
Hardman goes balladic on “Angel Eyes”, and Cobb adopts brushes with a behind-the-scenes support that is not in Blakey's style at all.
Hardman seems to have matured in the four years between the recordings, his playing more confident and with a rounder tone.

BILL HARDMAN: Bill Hardman Quintet: Bill Hardman (trumpet); "Sonny Red" Sylvester Kyner (alto saxophone); Ronnie Matthews (piano); Doug Watkins, Bob Cunningham (bass); Jimmy Cobb (drums).
This swinging collection boasts two sessions that feature trumpeter Bill Hardman: one as a member of Art Blakey`s Jazz Messengers, and one as the leader of his own quintet.
As a bonus, Blakey takes a stunning solo outing on the only stereo cut of the session, the aptly title "Study in Rhythm." Hardman`s lyrical style is in evidence on his session`s opening standard "Angel Eyes," as the trumpeter makes an expressive statement in both the melody and his subsequent solo spots.

Bill Hardman is solid, if not too original, but still lacks an innovative style.
The album is completed by four tracks from 1961's The Bill Hardman Quintet, which show an immense amount of growth in the four intermittent years.
Hardman seems to have found his own unique voice, best demonstrated by his interepretation of the classic "Angel Eyes." The overall effect of this inclusion is a well-balanced, logical collection.

Art Blakey - Hard Bop (MCD-1005)
Beyond Blakey's always magnificent and contoured drumming, this quintet's strongest asset was the beautiful, tart blend of Jackie McLean's alto sax and Bill Hardman's trumpet.
Repertoire was always an important factor in the Jazz Messengers' sound, and this hard-swinging session of December 12 & 13, 1956 mixed excellent originals by McLean and Hardman with jazz tunes by Mal Waldron and Gigi Gryce, two standards and a Gershwin medley.
Bill Hardman may have been with Blakey longer than any other trumpet player--1955-57, 1968-78--but had the misfortune of not being on the Blue Note sessions.

The remainder of this superb sextet includes tenor saxophonist Bill Pierce, pianist Donald Brown, bassist Charles Fambrough and the veteran drummer/leader.
Tenor saxophonist Bill Pierce and bassist Charles Fambrough were still present from the older band for this excellent LP.

This quintet date (with trumpeter Bill Hardman, tenor saxophonist Junior Cook, pianist Walter Bishop Jr., bassist Paul Brown, and drummer Leroy Williams) is very much in the bop vein.
Despite its title (the name of a Hardman minor blues), much of the session is actually hard driving.
John Coltrane 's "Lazy Bird" and Hardman's ballad feature on "Smooch" are highlights of this excellent album.

Bill Hardman had long been a talented -- if not overly original -- bop trumpet soloist.
Best known for his four stints with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Hardman is in excellent form on a pair of Brazilian pieces, two originals by pianist Mickey Tucker and Tadd Dameron's lesser-known "I Remember Love."
