PBS - THE WEST - CHAPTER X ACTING AS SPECIAL SCOUT
As Fort Larned was my post, and as I wanted to go there anyhow, I said to Austin that I would carry the dispatches, and if any of the boys wished to go along, I would like to have them for company's sake.
I had left the main wagon road some distance to the south, and had traveled parallel with it, thinking this to be a safer course, as the Indians might be lying in wait on the main road for dispatch bearers and scouts.
To recapitulate: I had ridden from Fort Larned to Fort Zarah (a distance of sixty-five miles) and back in twelve hours, including the time when I was taken across the Arkansas by the Indians.

 Buffalo Bill Cody
It was while working under this contract that he acquired the sobriquet of "Buffalo Bill." It clung to him ever after, and he wore it with more pride than he would have done the title of prince or grand duke.
It was not a formidable-looking hunting outfit, and the captain was disposed to be a trifle patronizing.
Captain Graham—as his name proved to be — and his companions were a trifle sore over missing even the opportunity of a shot, but they professed to be more than repaid for their disappointment by witnessing a feat they had not supposed possible in a white man—hunting buffalo without a saddle, bridle, or reins.

 Fort Tours | Fort Larned
Fort Larned was established in 1859 as a base of military operations against hostile Indians of the Central Plains, to protect traffic along the Santa Fe Trail and as an agency for the administration of the Central Plains Indians by the Bureau of Indian Affairs under the terms of the Fort Wise Treaty of 1861.
About halfway between the forts Cody was "jumped" by forty Kiowas—men he had seen at Fort Larned earlier that day—men who had suddenly painted their faces for war.
As the Kiowa rushed upon him with hands extended, however, Cody's immediate impulse was to shake hands with them, even though the war paint and rowdy manner of the Indians clearly indicated their intention was not friendly.

 Waterfowl - Reports
In March 1995, while Wildlife Biologists Greg Balogh and Bill Larned were searching the Bering Sea pack ice for the never-before-found wintering grounds of the spectacled eider, they made a dramatic discovery.
Huge, dense flocks of spectacled eiders sat scattered beneath them, crammed into small holes in the ice, holes kept open in the -20 degree F weather by the heat and movement of the birds themselves.
Regardless, Larned and Balogh were soon in a small twin-engine aircraft on their way to check out the location from which the signal supposedly came.

Dement'ev and Gladkov (1952) reported that the enormous flocks wintering near the Commander Islands at the turn of the century were greatly reduced by the 1930s.
In summary, there is concern that Steller's eiders may be declining in number range-wide, but the magnitude of any change in population size is unknown because of a lack of precise population estimates.
This suggests that the variation in abundance seen at Barrow may be typical of Steller's eiders in general, rather than peculiar to Barrow or symptomatic of birds on the periphery of the eastern end of the species' range.
