He stated that Mathis shot Hugh Montgomery and that Bill Jackson shot John A. Montgomery, and the that he, (Lester) had taken the lamp into the room where the officers had gone to bed to get some corn cobs for stoppers to the bottles of whisky Mathis had sold Jackson.
Mathis was first called before the defense, and stated that Lester did the shooting and that Jackson left the house and premises before the Montgomerys went to bed.
Bill Jackson, the accused, testified that he was over at Mathis’ on the evening of the killing and was there when the Montgomerys arrived.

Mathis’ bill amends a section of existing law that requires children who are under the age of 6 and weigh less than 60 pounds to ride in a “safety seat properly secured to the vehicle,” according to Arkansas Code Annotated 27-34-104.
Mathis’ bill simply bans smoking in all motor vehicles carrying children who are restrained in those seats.
He said his bill was meant to be enforced in the same way as A. “I don’t know that the police are going to be out there with a scale weighing anybody,” Mathis said.

House Bill 2012 by Rep. Bob Mathis, D-Hot Springs, was approved on a voice vote by the Senate Committee on State Agencies and Governmental Affairs.
Mathis told the Senate panel that his bill would open the door for more contractors in the state's metal building industry, which is heavily involved in school construction, to compete for state contracts.
Mathis' bill, which he said he has worked on for more than a year, will move to the Senate floor.

She said that Will Mathis, Bill Jackson and Orlando Lester were at her home the night of the killing of the Montgomerys and that a dispute arose between her husband and Hugh Montgomery about a pistol.
Mathis stated in her examination before the coroner’s jury that she had tried to dissuade the men from committing the crime and that Mathis held the lamp and Lester did the shooting.
Lester, when placed upon the stand, testified that he was sent by Will Mathis for a gun with which to do the shooting, and that Whit Owens told him when he loaded the gun not to let the Montgomerys escape.
