Supporters of the bill, which include credit card companies and banks, say the change would prevent abuses by compulsive shoppers, gamblers, deadbeat parents and others who don’t want to be responsible for their debts.
Under the bill, the exemption would be limited to $125,000 if the individual in bankruptcy bought the residence at least three years and four months before filing.
The bill also would exempt asset protection trusts, which are used by physicians and corporate executives to protect their assets from lawsuits.
