  BILL NELSON BIOGRAPHY
Bill Nelson is both an enigma and a highly public person whose motivations sometimes seem shrouded in complex mysteries, yet whose sometimes prodigious output amounts to public development of song ideas and musical experiments.
Nelson was born in the West Riding of Yorkshire, in the semi-industrial town of Wakefield, showing a talent for art and design and a passion for science fiction.
Nelson's career began in earnest with the recording and release of a solo album, Northern Dream, which was financed by the owner of the Record Bar, a local Wakefield record store.

Bill Nelson (musician) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bill Nelson (born William Nelson on 18 December 1948) is a prolific guitarist, songwriter, painter and experimental musician from Wakefield, Yorkshire, England.
Nelson was educated at the Wakefield College of Art, where he developed an interest in the work of poet and filmmaker Jean Cocteau.
Nelson and his manager Mark Rye had formed the Cocteau Records label in 1981, and for many years this label handled the majority of Nelson's output, which often included multiple albums per year.

 Freak Emporium - Bill Nelson
Nelson continued to move forward into unchartered territory with this, originally an EP that followed the more spiritually-oriented 'The Love That Whirls', now boosted to full album status by dint of several highly welcome bonus tracks.
Nelson's masterful guitar playing returns very much to the fore here on the track 'The Real Adventure' but on tracks like 'Glow World' and 'Everyday Feels Like A New Drug' he was moving further toward what would eventually be known as dance music.
Nelson's third solo album (or second, depending on which way one looks at it) released in 1981 and salvaged from the sessions for the aborted second Red Noise project.

 ATOM AGE
Nelson was probably more inclined towards this latter train of thought when he found himself at the other end of the spectrum in the early '90s.
Nelson's manager returned the tapes two days before the court case was due to start, but by that stage lawyers had found so much work for themselves -- sorry, had found so many 'contractual anomalies' -- that the court case continued, until a judgement in Nelson's favour in 1994.
Nelson scours many car boot sales and antique fairs for the memorabilia and esoteric gear that adorns his studio; one of his finds is something that looks like a cross between a '50s tape recorder and dictaphone, and contains a tiny reel-to-reel.

Bill Nelson, from Guitarist Magazine, 1996
After several years away from the flash and musical playing of his days in 70s cult band Be Bop Deluxe, Bill Nelson is back on the guitar with a vengeance.
By the time Bill was 15 he was playing guitar himself in local club bands.
It was while he was at art college that Bill discovered Holyground studios in Wakefield's Kirkgate and was invited to play guitar on two albums that were being recorded there, "A to Oster" and "Astral Navigations".

WotanCCC: Bill Nelson is a man whose passion is not only music, but also the magic of its very construction and its relationship to art and life.
From the heady rock star days of Be Bop Deluxe and Bill Nelson's Red Noise to a very prolific solo career, Bill has become something of a maverick figure on the British music scene and, by its very nature, his material is often hard to define and categorize.
Bill has released a number of albums lately on his label Populuxe through Voiceprint, but most has recently joined the Discipline Global Mobile label with two new releases.

Bill Nelson, from Guitarist Magazine, 1996
Recorded on a primitive 2-track Ferrograph machine, Bill Nelson's first long-player drifted out across the airwaves during the summer of 1971, just ahead of the 3-day working week, runaway inflation and the EEC.
Bill's liaison with 'The Teenagers' ended after he discovered The Who (the rest of the band thought the windmilling and amplifier abuse was "just too much").
The more confident "Futurama" followed a year later, but it was with "Sunburst Finish" that the band achieved their most significant commercial success, reaching the charts with both the album itself and the "Ships in the Night" single.

Having followed Bill Nelson's career since his days as front man with Be Bop Deluxe I have to say that this double CD broken into two parts (Whimsy and Whimsy Two) has been a permanent feature on the CD player of late.
The two albums are full of excellent songs and those distinctive Bill Nelson vocals not forgetting of course the tasteful guitar playing we have come to expect from Bill Nelson over the years.
This particular album however is one of Bill's best solo albums and I would personally recommend this album as a good place to start if you are perhaps a lapsed Bill Nelson fan.

 Judgement - Nelson v. Rye
Mr Nelson agreed that he cancelled the one meeting with Mr Thomas which he remembered had been arranged because he said that he was told about it at the last minute and had already checked out of his hotel and had a lot of luggage with him.
Even if Mr Nelson was not aware of the contents of this particular communication between Mr Thomas and Mr Rye, he was aware that this was the message he would be given if there was a meeting and it was not one he was prepared to listen to.
Mr Nelson said under cross-examination that the correspondence from Russells put too much emphasis on price and that the main point he wanted conveyed was that the album should not be released at all.

After his time in Be Bop Deluxe, Bill Nelson came up with Red Noise and produced a set of very quirky new wave rock that fusioned guitars and synthesizers in a very innovative way.
Bill Nelson had established his name as singer/songwriter in the mid-seventies with Be Bop Deluxe, releasing five studio albums in five years, each of which progressed their initial Ziggy-plays-Yes hybrid, evolving it into a highly distinctive quasi-futuristic commercial rock sound.
By 1978 Nelson was lauded as one of the most gifted and creative guitarists this country has ever produced, regularly featuring in the top-ten polls run by the music press, and lionized by magazines such as International Musician and Guitarist.

 Directory - Book Review
Bill Nelson is a musician and creative artist who is mostly known for his leadership of groups Be Bop Deluxe and Red Noise during the 70's.
I did not expect to enjoy this book as I have no knowledge of this genre of music and tend to find the minutiae of other people's day-to-day lives tedious, but Nelson is an engaging writer whose range of language and ideas make this a fascinating read.
His reflections on the difficulties of producing 'cutting edge' music and his impatience with the blandness of modern pop are set against the background of his North Yorkshire village life.

Fluffhouse review - Bill Nelson - With Culturemix
This collaboration between eclectic guitarist Bill Nelson and Japanese musician Yumiko Morioka does what it says on the tin.
The casual style-hopping is evident from the first track, which jumps from sitars and disaffected-sounding Japanese female vocals to Nelson's pumping guitar and Talking Heads-lite vocals.
A lot of this is a stone's throw from TV incidental music, but intelligent, well-written TV music all the same.
