Dorchester County Public Library: Library Information: Annie Oakley
Because of Annie's fame as a member of the "Buffalo Bill's Wild West," as a legend of the days of the "Wild West," as a world-renowned marksman, and as an individual who continues to remain in the public domain, this house, associated with her, is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
Oakley and Butler both acknowledged that they enjoyed home ownership but that Oakley was not a housekeeper and was not happy having servants and not being in control of her domestic arrangements.
Oakley and Butler's period of home ownership and their desire for a change in the extensive travel required by the "Wild West" caused them to leave the show in 1901.

NEWSARAMA - IN MEMORIAM: BILL OAKLEY
Bill Oakley was easily one of the best letters out there, and it's sad to hear of his passing.
Bill Oakley was always one of the letterers I noticed, because he was damn good, and usually was on good books, too.
To hear that Bill needed to work from his hospital room to help pay his bills is sickening and utterly disturbing to me. I must not fully understand the purpose and criteria for ACTOR to get involved.

Bill Oakley was one of the best damn letterers ever, but to me, he was a great person who treated me with respect and who I consider a friend.
Bill, Kenny and Pat were the other letterers on Marvel's production staff when I joined it, and we had about as much fun as anyone could possibly have at a day job, until we each eventually left staff and went our separate ways.
Bill was one of those letterers who had such a distintive style that you can tell it was his work just by looking at it.

Among the best on Buffalo Bill that McMurtry cites from is a 1979 book by Nellie Snyder Yost of North Platte, looking at the famous man’s family, friends, fame, failures and fortunes, with much of the episode taking place in Nebraska, where Buffalo Bill pretty much invented rodeos and began his world-hopping Wild West Show.
Bill Cody lost control of his funeral because of debt to a Denver newspaper magnate, just as he lost control over “large patches of his life,” and wasn’t buried until five months after his death, at a location and manner not of his choosing.
Oakley, by contrast, “died precisely as she shot” with a female embalmer, lady undertaker and clear instructions on ceremony and her burial dress.

Oakley gets short shrift; the first 140 pages of the book are devoted almost exclusively to Cody and his "back story," with the heroine of the story getting barely a dozen before McMurtry shifts his focus to the troupe's European tour, beginning with Queen Victoria's Jubilee in 1887.
The chapter on Bill's efforts to try and save his good friend Sitting Bull at the time of the Ghost Dance Uprising is an extremely dramatic one, even though readers familiar with the subject know what the dreadful end will be.
