Cross and Odenkirk are the principal writers of this series, and their ingenious use of pre-taped segments cleverly intermixed with "live" segments demonstrates not only their mastery of the medium, but their effortlessness at thumbing their noses at standard sitcom & sketch conventions.
Bob Odenkirk worked for years as a comedy writer for Saturday Night Live (where Lorne Michaels rarely aired his sketches - - too edgy), Conan O'Brien (they met at SNL) and was a main stage cast member at Second City (he originated Chris Farley's popular "Motivational Speaker" character at Second City before SNL overkilled it).
David Cross was a standup comic and writer in Boston for years before becoming part of the alternative comedy scene in L.A. Cross and Odenkirk met as writers on Ben Stiller's short lived show and began working together as a team before HBO started to notice their act.

The script is written like the five guys who wrote it -- Scott Aukerman, David Cross, Bob Odenkirk, B.J. Porter and Brian Posehn -- just sat around with a few beers and jotted down whatever came to mind.
With its secondary-character narrator and its early-scenes montage-of-life, the script not only cant distinguish itself from all its stinky predecessors, it appears to be striving to replicate everything that made them jejune in the first place.

The brainchild of comedians Bob Odenkirk and David Cross (both of whom had shared time together on the short-lived-but-brilliant Ben Stiller Show), the program basically cuts loose for a half hour and doesn't stop until everything is over.
Satirizing television, the news, the government, and just about anything else, the show manages to take many aspects of the average sketch comedy zone and change the rules enough to be very, very funny.
For most of the episodes, all of these participants are actually together in a single session, but the commentary is recorded well and everyone is fairly easy to understand when they're not talking over each other.
