Yarmouth Lumber President Bill Phipps is the first to admit to a "self-inflicted fl eye." Over the years, he told the Gray Town Council, the company made some mistakes by allowing diesel fuel and waste water to seep into the ground at its facility on Route 100 at the Cumberland line.
Phipps prefaced a written statesment to the Council with a comment that he felt citizens in Gray did not know him or his company because he has kept a low profile since moving the company to its present location 12 years ago.

Phipps says it would be a mistake, however, to say that he does not believe in Jesus.

The Rev. Bill Phipps sparked nationwide debate in October when he said in a newspaper interview that he did not believe Christ was God, was bodily resurrected or was the only way to God.
Phipps was elected in August to a three-year term as moderator of the church, which was formed in 1925 by the union of Methodist, Congregational and most of the country's Presbyterian churches.
Since the article was published in October, Phipps has apologized for any pain his comments may have caused and has explained that he believes Jesus was "as much of the nature of God as we can see in a human being" and was resurrected spiritually in people's hearts, rather than bodily.

Phipps granted an interview with the Ottawa Citizen and promptly denied the central doctrines of the Christian faith.
Phipps denied the virgin birth, the bodily resurrection of Christ, the existence of heaven and hell, and, most directly, the deity of Christ.
Phipps issued an official statement shortly after his notorious interview and apologized "that the way my faith has been conveyed to you has hurt or damaged some of you." Of course, it was not the moderator's faith that scandalized, but his denial of the faith once for all delivered to the saints.
