This woman Bill was calling on was a long time customer who bought frequently and turned in fairly nice orders, so much so that upon her death an entire room was stockpiled with the products she'd purchased, never opened or used.
Knowing his need, if Bill had found out and refused to accept any further orders, she would have felt that he was being unreasonable.
