Bill Purcell is the fifth mayor of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, elected first in 1999 and reelected to a second term in 2003 with a record setting 84.8 percent of the vote.
Purcell opened a new police precinct in Hermitage, built a new precinct in North Nashville and moved the Central Precinct to the heart of downtown on Broadway adjacent to the arena and convention center.
Purcell urged the Parks Board to pursue a master plan of the park’s system that is resulting in an unprecedented expansion of parks and greenways across the city including a new park at the Public Square beside the historic Courthouse.

When Taylor asked the two legislators the possibility of education bonds, Purcell said that there is one proposal that would take construction dollars from the lottery, an estimated $200-300 million, to pay off $2-3 billion in bonds for public schools.
Purcell also said an increase in the minimum wage is very likely as 93 percent of Democrats and 69 percent of Republicans favor it.

Bill R. Phillips, who has led Vanderbilt’s federal government relations effort for the past five years, has joined the administration of newly elected Nashville Mayor Bill Purcell as chief of staff.
Purcell and Phillips have worked together on the annual Family Reunion, a public policy conference moderated by Vice President Al Gore and Tipper Gore and held for the past three years on the Vanderbilt campus.
The Child and Family Policy Center at the Vanderbilt Institute for Public Policy Studies, which Purcell formerly directed, is one of the conference’s sponsors.
