Bill Saluga - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He is best known for his cigarette-smoking, zoot suit-wearing television character Raymond J. Johnson, Jr.
Bill Saluga was a founding member, along with Fred Willard, Michael Mislove, George Memmoli, and Patti Deutsch of the improvisational comedy troupe Ace Trucking Company.
He has appeared on several television programs, including Seinfeld, and is the co-author of Bill Saluga's Name Game Book (ISBN 0-553-20754-7).

dOc DVD Review: The David Steinberg Show (1976-77) - Printable
This isn't helped by one of Saluga's other characters, Raymond J. Johnson, Jr., whose obligatory tag line runs a full 30 seconds every episode he appears in (which is nearly all of them).
Saluga's prominence in the program doesn't help; the Johnson character feels extraneous and isn't all that funny.
He covers the history of the show as well as his own career pretty briskly, though oddly he hardly mentions Saluga, who dominates the program (he was also one of the writers).

Saluga sounds like he swallowed Chef Boy-ar-dee and stumbles around with his pants hiked up to his neck.
While he doesn't resort to outright racism (he thankfully refuses to put an "a" at the end of every word), he's still a chore to endure.

 Hooray for Captain Spaulding
This project sounds worse (even given that I threw in that Bill Saluga was signed up for a 1.5-million play-or-pay deal and the movie was contractually required to feature "You can call me Ray..." three times).
The show also features the titular David Steinberg, a funny comedian who recorded funny album "Booga Booga", and Bill Saluga aka Raymond J. Johnson, Jr.
Chris Rock makes an interesting point, which wasn't really expanded on, that fl comedy doesn't have the no-profanity tradition of white comedy; Rock's claim being that they weren't going to get on TV or go beyond what they were doing anyway.

DVD Verdict Review - The David Steinberg Show
There, a conflict would arise—usually about a sketch planned for later—but everything would work out in the end, and the show would go off without a hitch.
And then there are the guest stars, who all seem to be up in Canada as a personal favor to Steinberg.
I don't think I've ever seen a more embarrassing line-up of so-called "special" guests than the bottom-feeders on this show, and it's certainly reflected on screen with lame songs, sketches and comedy bits that aren't compelling in any way—Ed McMahon doing a much-touted W.C. Fields impression is every bit as bad as it sounds.
