  Bill Szymczyk
Szymczyk seems to have slid easily into each of the many serendipitous scenarios that fate had in store for him, and it is perhaps that ability to accept things as they are that allowed him to benefit from each new turn of events, and for the artists he worked with to reap similar advantages.
Bill Szymczyk says he and Henley invested a lot of time experimenting with microphone choices and placements, but that most of the time they reverted to fairly common configurations.
Szymczyk and the band began working on it nearly three years ago, but the same personality conflicts that scuttled the band the first time are preventing this career coda's completion.

Like many producers of the era Szymczyk worked at a 4-track studio where everything was cut live and by the seat of your pants.
The money allowed Szymczyk the luxury of relaxing a bit from the industry and like many of his contemporaries Szymczyk spent much of the past two decades recovering from the drug fog of the '70s.
Even in his abscence, though, Szymczyk remains a class act whose work is felt through the younger producers and engineers he has inspired.

Classic Tracks: recording B.B. King’s “The Thrill Is Gone
Szymczyk arranged the musicians around King, who sat with his back to a padded wall of the mid-sized (approximately 30×15-foot) recording room, with drummer Lovelle in a corner with low gobos around him, allowing eye contact with the rest of the band but providing some acoustical isolation.
Szymczyk's mix for “The Thrill Is Gone” and the rest of the album took place during just two days in the same new Hit Factory location.
The second plate was used for what Szymczyk calls “the old CBS [Studios] trick” — sending a signal to a “slap-back” effect tape delay and then passing it through the plate set for about a three-second decay, an effect used on the string tracks.

PRODUCER BILL SZYMCZYK is best known for his work with B.B. King ("The Thrill Is Gone"), The James Gang, Joe Walsh and The Eagles.
Szymczyk recently had the chance to upgrade the sound quality significantly on The Eagles' CD catalog last year and The James Gang's this spring.
Szymczyk took over as producer starting with 1974's On the Border, and continued on through with four consecutive #1 albums, One of These Nights, Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975, Hotel California and The Long Run.

The band wanted to rock, but Johns tended to extract the lush side of the band's double-edged music.
To record their third album, On the Border, they at first worked with Johns but after completing two tracks, turned to Bill Szymczyk to produce the rest of the album.
Szymczyk brought in Don Felder to add slide guitar to a song called "Good Day in Hell", and the band was so impressed that two days later, they invited Felder to become the fifth Eagle and he accepted.

You can tell that Bill is frustrated that this project has hit a wall.
It is also obvious that Glenn is controlling the recordings right now, as overdubs are being done at his home studio, and Bill is no longer involved.
If Bill, in his capacity as their producer for many years, can make this statement at all, it is not lightly made.

Joe Walsh and The James Gang
Some of the original tunes are going to have you tapping your toes ("Take A Look Around"), and producer Bill Szymczyk comes through with some groovy orchestration and a clever 60s acid rock ambience.
Walsh and the band's lethargic, wimpy swan song is a big step down from the last two LPs, with Peters and Fox getting in a series of their own, utterly mediocre compositions, and co-producer Szymczyk's horn and string arrangements slaughtering half the record a la Let It Be.
And the rest is just plain insubstantial: co-producer Szymczyk's sweeping string arrangement can't salvage Walsh's aimless, acoustic "Again"; "Yadig?" is a brief, Booker T. -style blues jam; Fox's "Things I Could Be" is mediocre mid-tempo rock, and his super-slow "Hey Jude"-ish ballad "Live My Life Again" isn't much more distinct, or much more listenable.

From the opening thunder of his take on Leon Russell's "Stranger In A Strange Land" to the pensive closer, Jesse Winchester's "A Showman's Life", we think you'll be amazed at his reworking of some of your longtime favorites and turned on to some gems that slipped by almost everyone their first time around.

With equal amounts of stridency and overblown self indulgence this album introduces the world to Joe Walsh's song writing and the sound of a band with two solid years of road work.
Though Bill Szymczyk continues to elaborate on a flowery Beatlesque (read George Martin) approach to orchestral augmentation, the album opens with a stripped down series of songs that harken back to Steppenwolf and look forward to Grand Funk Railroad, ZZTop and (uh-hm) even Steve Albini's Rapeman and Shellac projects.

Szymczyk then went on to enlist the help of surround mix guru and godfather Elliot Scheiner (who also did the surround mix on When Hell Freezes Over and who has also worked with Sting and Steely Dan).
What I'm getting at is that the surround mix on this release is a major departure from the stereo versions that you will be familiar with from the original vinyl album and later CD.
Well, on this release, Szymczyk and Scheiner have produced a masterpiece of surround sound creation and as Szymczyk points out, if ever there was a piece of music ideally suited to surround, the title track of Hotel California would have to be it.

The recording of the album, which was listed in The Who's fan club newsletter as beginning on February 18, 1980 (this may have been the date when the first batch of demos was played for the band) was helmed by American producer Bill Szymczyk at Odyssey Studios, London.
Szymczyk was then known primarily as the producer of The Eagles, a very successful band commercially but one with a very different sound from The Who.
Before recording could begin again Szymczyk was injured in a car accident in Miami and then was called to mix The Eagles' live album.
