Bill Van Auken's observations are astute and precise.
Bill Van Auken concludes with this statement: "....the testimony that was elicited made a strong case for a necessary measure that neither Democrats or Republicans will advocate, much less carry out: the nationalization of the energy industry so that it can be run under public ownership and control in the interest of the entire population."
It is injustice itself to have to be subjected to the capitalistic whims of a handful of corporations that care only for their own pocketbooks and not for the benefit of the very consumers who are the cause of their existence.

Comrade Van Auken was introduced as the presidential candidate of the American Socialist Equality Party at next month's election which prompted the natural question of why he was not campaigning back home.
Van Auken's presence would have evoked among Marxists of an older age nostalgic memories of American Marxism for although now polarised between the Republicans and the Democrats there was a time when there was a vigorous socialist tradition in this bastion of capitalism.

Provisions in the Senate version of the bill that would have required the big pharmaceutical firms to give larger rebates on drugs bought by states under Medicaid and cut overpayments to HMOs covering Medicare beneficiaries—which alone would have saved an estimated $22 billion over 10 years—were stripped from the legislation.
Some in Congress charged that the final language of the bill was directly dictated by lobbyists for HMOs and drug companies, which are among the largest campaign contributors to both major parties.
At the same time, the bill includes only $1 billion in new funding for childcare—$11 billion less than what is needed to allow parents to manage the extended work requirement, according to an estimate by the Congressional Budget Office.
