The radiometers were built by technicians in the School of Earth Science and have been mounted on the university's Grob G109B aircraft (one on the canopy and the other below a wing) for field work at Billiatt Conservation Park, north of Lameroo.
To date the field work has been conducted on clear days to test the equipment's accuracy in measuring the changes in UVB readings associated with changes in altitude and to test variations in albedo (the ratio between incoming and outgoing radiation).
Billiatt Conservation Park was selected for the experiments because there is a great contrast between the park area which reflects very little radiation -and so has a low albedo - and the adjoining farmland which is much brighter and more reflective.
