Dedicating the evening to Beckett and her husband Robert, who died a year ago that week, Whitelaw's homage to the man who wrote some of the most compelling theatre of the twentieth century was scintillating and emotional.
Whitelaw also performed scenes from "Foot Falls," "Happy Days," and "Eh, Joe?" All were consummate (some even included elements of her original costumes), and I sat there counting my blessings that I had to opportunity to see this veteran of the stage perform roles created for her.
That night, the words of the man Whitelaw claimed "wasn't gloomy at all" were performed as they were meant to be: bare bones, raw, and masterfully.

She recounts her remarkable, busy life in a literate, readable, surprisingly gossip-free autobiography that starts with her traumatic childhood during the blitz in the 1940s and ends in the early 1990s with her "new" postacting life as a college lecturer on Beckett.
Whitelaw is most vivid when she describes her most difficult moments--the wartime bombings, her father's early death, her son's battle with meningitis, and the many trials she endured while making Beckett's spare, demanding plays live and breath.
You can practically smell the fat frying in Whitelaw's descriptions of the cholesterol-heavy ``tea'' (bread soaked in roasting pan juices) served during her 1930s childhood in northern England and feel the grit in her mouth as she recalls eating dirt with a teaspoon (``I like the taste'').

Review of Billie Whitelaw: An Evening With Samuel Beckett   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Several times on Sunday evening, particularly regarding Eh Joe, Whitelaw lamented the fact that Beckett had never publicly read or recorded any of his own work.
Disarmingly, she even rattled off the music-hall ditty "All My Life I've Wanted To Be A Barrow-Boy", which she would apparently use to lighten the tone of rehearsals with Beckett.
One or two of her responses to audiences questions gave faint hints that Whitelaw's previously reported decision to retire from theatre may not quite be absolute, but even an informal evening such as this gives a powerful reminder of the body of work she has already bequeathed in her stage and screen collaborations with Beckett.
