  Area Analysis
Billings is located in south-central Montana, approximately 224 miles southeast of Helena (state capitol), 219 miles southeast of Great Falls, 142 miles east of Bozeman, 132 miles from the Northeast Entrance to the Yellowstone National Park and 120 miles northeast of Cody, Wyoming.
The City of Billings and Yellowstone County are the largest in the state with populations of roughly 95,000 and 125,000 respectively.
Billings is the largest community in Montana and Wyoming and serves as the major trade center for eastern Montana and northern Wyoming.

At the annual election in November, 1865, Reuben Riggs was chosen Senator, receiving twenty-five votes in the county and 230 votes in the senatorial district, having a majority of sixty-five in a vote of 395.
In 1867, the assessed valuation of the county was $106,447; in 1870, $640,320; in 1873, $987,702; in 1875, $1,499,128; in 1876, $1,499,128; in 1880, $2,112,247.45; in 1882, $2,292,776.38.
The percentage of increase in population in the county from 1870 to 1875 is 555; from 1875 to 1880 it is 142; from 1870 to 1880, 1,522 per cent.

 Dutchuk v. Board of County Commissioners, Billings Co., ND, 429 N.W.2d 21 (N.D. App. 1988)
Pursuant to Article 1, § 16 of the North Dakota Constitution and Chapter 32-15, N.D.C.C., the Board deposited $1,292 with the Clerk of the Billings County District Court to purchase 3.86 acres of permanent highway right-of-way easement and 1.15 acres of temporary slope easement from Dutchuk for a road improvement project.
The Board countered with the testimony of Laura Griffin, the tax director of Billings County for three and one-half years, to support its position that Dutchuk was not entitled to severance damages.
Griffin also testified that she had never considered severance damages in any of her appraisals for Billings County because she believed that severance damages occurred only when there was a physical severing of property by a road.

Billings returned to Cloud county about April 1, promising to return with his effects which he did about the first of May. He hired Sol Marsh, Charles Hillsinger and Mott Wood to assist him in building his dugout; this dugout was built on the Island.
Billings about this time began to appear in his true character: be was very indifferent as to whether he remunerated Reed or not.
Sol Marsh informed Billings that he had been a party to the theft of Reed's supplies and they must be replaced before Reed returned, so a plan to replace the provisions was arranged by sending Sol Marsh and Coleman to Republican City for provisions.

 County taxpayers to get bowling bill - billingsgazette.com
When all of the bills are paid for the recently completed American Bowling Congress national tournament, Yellowstone County won't get back between $260,000 and $420,000 it loaned to the MetraPark Foundation for tournament-related expenses, says County Finance Director Scott Turner.
Under the plan, the county was to be repaid with money collected from gambling revenues, a commission on motel rooms rented to bowlers and other sources such as private donations from businesses and industry groups.

In 1964, four active nests were located in Billings County (V. Erickson) and one in Bowman County (H. Kantrud, RES).
Formerly, this species was found breeding along the Missouri River valley in the sector that extends downstream from the mouth of the Little Missouri River to the vicinity of Washburn in McLean County.
Extreme dates of nestlings (15 nests): April 29 [1964] in Billings County (V. Erickson) to July 22 [1960] in Billings County (A. Henderson).

 Molina Keeps Pressure on Pellman Over Law Firm Billings
County Supervisor Gloria Molina yesterday tabled a motion for oversight of county counsel billings, but she criticized the county lawyers’ office for taking six weeks just to compile data on how much is paid out to contract law firms.
Molina said a supervisor in the County Counsel’s Office should have called a halt to the firm’s work after reviewing the case and seeing that there was no way a jury could find for the county.
In her motion yesterday, Molina called for a new county counsel “managing partner,” with private sector experience, to review case files being worked on by outside firms to see that costs are not being run up unnecessarily.
