Billy Breathes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Billy Breathes was the eighth studio album by legendary rock band Phish.
It remains today as the one of the most popular Phish albums, and this release, along with Farmhouse, is said to have connected the band, which at the time had a strong a cult following, to a more mainstream audience.
Rolling Stone Magazine said that "Billy Breathes confirms that Phish is not just a jam band from Burlington."

Released in the fall of 1996, Billy Breathes was Phish’s fifth studio LP and marked the first time that the group used an outside producer to help with the album.
Regardless of what thousands of college students say, Billy Breathes is Phish’s best album, an absolutely amazing recording which far surpasses anything else I’ve heard from the band (save for the singles Heavy Things and Down With Disease from Farmhouse and Hoist respectively).
Billy Breathes is an amazing record, an album that is cohesive, aurally pleasing, and intelligently written.

GUITAR WORLD: Billy Breathes is the first album to successfully recreate the type of peaks and valleys which characterize your live shows.
That's the first thing that you learn on any other instrument, but guitar players learn the blues scale as a pattern, so they end up playing stuff with their fingers instead of their ears.

And even more fitting that the breakthrough should be Billy Breathes, which took longer to record than any of their previous studio efforts and which eclipses all of them in quality.
The songs are short, predominantly acoustic and contemplative, with little hint of the lyrical goofiness and long improvisational sections that distinguished Phish's earlier work and concerts.
Maybe I'm too emotionally tied to the prog and fusion of the late '60s and early '70s to be objective, but I have the feeling that music is where Phish's hearts lie, too, and they just don't measure up.

Besides a couple of rocking tunes like "Free" (the album's first single) and "Character Zero," the album is filled with beautiful acoustic songs that expose the soul--felt emotions that have been missing on most of their recordings.
"Talk," "Bliss," and the title track, "Billy Breathes," are some of the most effective of the more intimate songs.
"Billy Breathes" is so different from other Phish albums in that it seems to be a huge release from beginning to end.

With the release of Billy Breathes, the East Coast-based quartet have arrived as a musical force to be dealt with.
Their first studio release in two years, Phish put aside a lot of the free-form jamming they are now known for, and have released an album of tightly-written, tightly-played material.
As radio-friendly as the album is, Billy Breathes is, at times, almost a little too mellow.

"Billy Breathes" is a sleepy lullaby that swirls around odd "A Day in the Life"-esque chord changes.
The other ballads on the album, in comparison, are dull and cheesy at best, and total Beatles rip-offs at worst.
"Billy Breathes"'s structure also casts a spell, as even a hint of theremin wafts over the canon refrain.

Thanks to producer Steve Lillywhite, Phish finally delivered a concise pop album with "Billy Breathes".
Lillywhite had the band cut away their jams and accentuate their songwriting, resulting in a series of tightly-written, melodic folk-rock and psychedelic pop songs.
With the shorter songs, their musical depth and breadth is all the more apparent and impressive, making "Billy Breathes" the definitive Phish album the band has always strived to deliver.

This trend was gradually reversed beginning with ''Hoist'' and ''Billy Breathes''.

Although any witty Phish "phan" may disagree because the band's prior album, "A Live One," (which went gold) finally gave the rock mainstream the opportunity to hear what Phish was all about.
