Billy Corgan sounded happy, relaxed, and refreshed on Mary Star of the Sea, the 2003 debut from his first post-Smashing Pumpkins project, Zwan, which just goes to show that art doesn't always reflect the mindset of the artist.
Corgan not only returns to the music of his teenage years here, but his dramatic, emotive lyrics, which articulate his feelings far more directly than they have in the past, are terminally adolescent (and seem even more so when printed in the liner notes, where certain phrases are grandly emphasized via all capital letters).
Corgan's exploring his own little world, one that may have a more selective appeal than either Smashing Pumpkins or Zwan, but will nevertheless resonate to those who bother to regularly check in on his space on myspace.

Billy Corgan enters a different territory with "The Future Embrace." The only previous work of his, that even relates to this disc at all, is 1998's "Adore," by The Smashing Pumpkins.

Corgan's admiral influences are obvious - the grey wash and wintry equanimity of Bowie's Neukoln phase, the phallanx of distantly shimmering flanged guitars recall The Banshees, the archaic and relentlessly mechanic drum machine summons forth the austerity of early Human League.
Corgan clearly loves the British new-wave movement, drafting in the cold dissonant synths of the Mode, the bleak and fragmented lyrics of Station to Station/Heroes era Bowie, the cold delivery of Ian Curtis, and the fuzzy guitars and the air of overblown melodrama favoured by The Cure.
Corgan's vocals are still a bit nasal, a bit high, but he puts so much passion into his singing that sooner or later you get yanked in.

Billy: Um, I don't know there's so many great bands, um that are out there right now, and, and bands that are still going from, you know, 'Gen X', whether it's nine inch nails or, or Pearl Jam, so you know I wouldn't take that much credit.
