Tentative Review by The Christopher Currie: Ultravox - Ingenuity
Under the leadership of Midge Ure and Billy Currie, they succeeded in an extremely rare art: making pop singles which were both accessible and artistically proficient (comparisons to early Roxy Music may be appropriate).
Currie's willingness to go through with the dilution of his earlier musical approach must count as evidence against him.
Despite Currie, this Ultravox doesn't have enough of a talent base to branch out on its own; when they try, the results are usually tedious.

Currie continued to pursue music (as he learned other instruments, including flute, Japanese flute, cello, bassoon, and keys), and during the '70s, met his future Ultravox bandmates.
Subsequently, Currie embarked on a solo career, including such albums as 1988's Transportation, 1990's Stand Up and Walk, and a pair of releases in 2001 on his own label, Puzzle, Unearthed and Keys and the Fiddle.

 Ultravox: album reviews and ratings
Characterized by Billy Currie's distinctive synthesizer's touch and Midge Ure's powerful voice, Ultravox will always be remembered for their 'Ure years'.
The sound is more ambitious than Vienna, the lyrics and arrangements have the grandiose New Romantic flair (or, to look at it negatively, some of the lyrics verge on highly pretentious, and some of the instrumental excesses have a 70s prog rock feel to them), and it's a very solid album overall.
There's lot of the classic Billy Currie soaring synth, Ure's vocals are still pleasantly melodramatic, and Warren Cann's tight and varied percussion drives everything along.

BILLY CURRIE - Still Movement   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Still Movement is a strangely evocative release for Billy Currie, the former keyboard wizard that brought us some of Ultravox most memorable moments.
Despite Currie’s electric violin and viola training, which more recently resulted in some classically-related releases, notably Unearthed in 2001, Still Movement pretty much harks back to a bygone age, where prog-rock and analogue synthesis reigned supreme.
This is very much the result of one man working rather methodically in an enclosed cocoon, and I think it's fair to say that Still Movement is somewhat out of touch with what people expect from an electronic-related artist in 2004, but then there is always a market for nostalgia.

Billy Currie : Stand up and Walk - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Stand Up and Walk is ex-Ultravox violinist Billy Currie's second solo album.
Released in 1990, two years after Transportation, his successful collaboration with Yes guitarist Steve Howe, this album offers a handful of instrumental tracks, in general more introspective (Currie was going through financial problems at the time, losing his house and private recording studio).
As one could expect, violin and viola are at the heart of Stand Up and Walk, but the music goes beyond mere setups for soloing: Currie is, after all, a melodist.

 ultrapop - ultravox
