  Billy Idol
Along with Duran Duran, Billy Idol was one the first pop/rock artists to achieve massive success in the early '80s due to a then brand-new U.S. television network, MTV.
Billy Idol spent the next few years working on his fourth studio release, but reappeared in the summer of 1989 as part of an all-star rendition of the Who's Tommy, with Idol playing the role of the sadistic character Cousin Kevin.
Idol teamed up once again with Stevens, was the subject of a VH1: Behind the Music special (as well as a Storytellers episode for the channel, which was ultimately issued as a CD), and issued a more extensive Greatest Hits set in 2001; the latter of which sold 500,000 copies in the U.S. alone.

Billy Idol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Billy Idol (born William Michael Albert Broad on 30 November 1955 in Middlesex, England) is an English hard rock musician.
Idol did not release a new album until 1986; Whiplash Smile sold very well and proved to be a smash, including the hits "To Be A Lover," "Don't Need A Gun," and the Country-flavored "Sweet Sixteen." Stevens soon left for a solo career and Idol continued.
Idol also filmed a live DVD at the Congress Theatre in Chicago on July 28, 2006, where his most dedicated fans braved 100 degree heat to attend the show.

 Billy Idol
Billy Idol represents the bridge between punk rock and hard rock/metal, a logical enough connection that somehow seemed unlikely until he made the transition.
Idol left Sussex University in 1976 to join the punk movement, specifically the group of rabid Sex Pistols fans called the Bromley Contingent.
Billy proved he still has some bad boy in him when his mic starting cutting out he threw a huge tantrum, hurling his non-working mic and a lot of curses at the techies, flinging a mic stand across the stage, and kicking a fan and amp out of his way repeatedly.

BILLY IDOL SHOW REVIEW : MUSICFRISK.COM
Indeed, Billy Idol, were he to record some of the new and quite interesting songs he showcased with much energy like "Man in a Killbox" or "Stranger in my Skin" that received great fan response at this show would be hard pressed to get radio airplay for them in today's environment.
This lack of radio presence makes the choice of no opening band all the more surprising, there are many young and upcoming artists that would give their right arm to play in front of a Billy Idol audience and they would bring in some fans there that otherwise would not attend the show.
It also makes Billy Idol a unique entity that amazingly has never been ripped off or properly replicated - virtually all of the bands roaming around in the early 21st century that are considered punk would be blown off the stage in a guitar contest with Steve Stevens.

The first is that, as this is Billy Idol's first album in over a decade, there's the implication that the world's original cuddly punk popster was releasing albums well into the 1990s (who knew?).
The second is that Billy Idol, as the aforementioned cuddly punk popster, actually had a lot more in common with 80s American poodle rockers like Bon Jovi and Motley Crue than anything to do with the UK's punk scene.
The third (and arguably most important) is that Mr Idol has quite a mischievous sense of humour--the lyrics for "Plastic Jesus" and "Yellin' at the Christmas Tree" are genuinely funny, and not in an ironic, so bad they're good, way.
