Popular Music and Society: Billy Price. The Soul Collection. - sound recording review
Pittsburgh-based Billy Price is a dedicated R&B historian and gifted interpreter of tunes originated by Otis Clay ("I Didn't Know the Meaning of Pain"), James Carr ("Let It Happen"), Syl Johnson ("Let Yourself Go"), and O. Wright ("Gonna Forget about You").
The rhythm section on this disc is amazingly tight on "A Man Must Stand for Something" and "Let It Happen." Beyond Price's pleading vocals, the texture of each tune is remarkably enriched by the background singing of Theresa Davis, Robin Robinson, and Dianne Madison and the gospel keyboard strokes of Max Leake.
But Billy Price is the thumping heart of this audio enterprise.
