  Billy Ward & His Dominoes
It was Ward's group - he organized it, masterminded in promotion, wrote the songs and arrangements and dictated every stage move right from the beginning.
Billy Ward is a gifted musician, a former child prodigy trained in the classics, voice and composition.
Ward was depending more and more on McPhatter's unique gospel fervor, both on ballads and jump tunes, but McPhatter himself was virtually unknown to the public.

VH1.com : The Dominoes : Biography - Urge Music Downloads
Billy Ward (born September 19, 1921, Los Angeles) had a minister father and a musician mother, and was a musical prodigy as a child, schooled in classical music theory and composition as well as performance.
Nobody disputed that Ward had the musical training to run the group on that level, and his ruling it with an iron hand where arrangements and repertory were concerned was understandable.
Ward must have sensed that there was trouble coming, however, because during the prior year he had approached a young boxer-turned-singer named Jackie Wilson, who had a voice that, if anything, was better than McPhatter's.

 Marv Goldberg's R&B Notebooks - The Dominoes
The Dominoes were the creation of "Billy Ward," who was born Robert Williams in Los Angeles in September 1921, and moved to Philadelphia as a child.
Ward would stand with the group when he sang lead on something, but would then retreat to his piano when others sang lead; it was from there that he ran the show and directed the group.
There's also a hint in the files that Ward did all the Liberty recordings on his own and then delivered them to Liberty (or at least used their studios for recordings which he was then allowed to remove from the premises for mixing and editing, before returning the tapes to them).

The Drifters - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Drifters were a long-lived American doo wop/RandB band, originally formed by Clyde McPhatter (of Billy Ward and the Dominoes) in 1953.
Williams was subsequently replaced by Rudy Lewis (of The Clara Ward Singers), who led the Drifters on such hits as "Some Kind Of Wonderful," "Please Stay," and "Up On The Roof." While recording "Please Stay", songwriter Burt Bacharach met Dionne Warwick, a back-up singer, thus beginning a legendary partnership.
Blunt and Billy Lewis left in 1979 and were replaced by the returning Johnny Moore and Louis Price.

Billy Ward was born in Los Angeles on September 19, 1921 to a minister father and a musician mother.
The Dominoes would continue to tour, with a few minor hits along the way, but the heyday was over.

Billy Ward : The Dominoes Meet the Ravens
A 20-song collection featuring two groups, drawn from Jubilee (and licensed from EMI), all unified by their chronology and the fact that their respective lead singers, Jackie Wilson of the Dominoes and Jimmy Ricks from the Ravens, became successful solo artists.
At the same time, Wilson delivers a gloriously frenzied lead performance on the Dominoes' previously unissued "Stop!...You're Sending Me." The sound is a match for the best reissues from Rhino or Ace, and the notes are a treasure trove of information on the Ravens, in particular.

Billy Ward, the brains behind the outfit, was uncanny in his ability to hear just the right vocals and vocalists for his great randb upbeat numbers and doo wop ballads.
The Dominoes, along with the more bluesy vocal group the Clovers, were the most popular and successful R&B group of the early 50's.
With original material, all written by group leader/pianist Billy Ward, such as "Have Mercy Baby" or "That's What You're Doing To Me" Clyde gives every subsequent rocker a blueprint to follow, though few had the chops to do so.

But it was Billy Ward's Dominoes who came up with the original outrageous (for 1952) 'Sixty Minute Man' in which the singer boasted of what he would do with his woman in those sixty minutes.
Ward, a pianist, positioned himself both at a distance from his singers on stage and reinforced his position as ring master.
The Dominoes grew increasingly popular in the 1950s, in the early years because of the female appeal of their key singer, Clyde McPhatter.
