Billy the Kid - Ballet Talk
I have a vague recollection, which might be entirely incorrect, that ABT did have Billy the Kid in its rep a few years ago, with Steifel (and probably others, given the way they cast things) in the lead.
Ballet was young in America at that time, academic or conservatory training in ballet was a new concept.
In Ballet Imperial, the narrative of the classical ballet is distilled to abstraction, even with the earlier pantomime uncut (it was removed in later revivals) there still was no story.

 Billy the Kid Summary
Billy the Kid was a hired gun who fought in the Lincoln County, New Mexico, range wars during the 1880s.
On December 19, the Kid barely escaped the posse's midnight ambush in Fort Sumner, during which one of the Kid's gang, Tom O'Folliard, was shot to death.
Responding to rumours that the Kid was still lurking in the vicinity of Fort Sumner almost three months after his escape, Sherriff Garrett and two deputies set out on July 14, 1881 to question one of the town's residents, a friend of the Kid's named Pete Maxwell.

 NPRN Composer of the Month
Several works in Copland's life represent breakthroughs, but perhaps the most important one for shaping the "American" quality of his music was the ballet "Billy the Kid." It was written in 1938 in collaboration with choreographer Eugene Loring; the two men were brought together by Lincoln Kirstein, who had founded the American Ballet.
Copland, however, manages to achieve a larger picture than to concentrate on Billy-the opening procession is brought back at the end, which suggests that the episode of Billy's rebelliousness, capture, escape, and eventual death are merely a part of the vast panorama of history in the Wild West and, by extension, of America itself.
If "Prairie Journal" anticipates this style, the use of cowboy tunes in "Billy the Kid" brought Copland face to face with the approach that was to result in his discovery of an "American" music.

Appalachian Spring, or Ballet for Martha (as it was commissioned by Martha Graham), is a ballet set in the 19th-century, about the American religious sect known as the Shakers.
It is based on the story of the outlaw Billy the Kid, who was said to have killed a man for every year of his life and was shot at the age of 20 by his one-time friend, the sheriff.
Billy the Kid is also superb, the opening evocation of "The Open Prairie" is magical and faintly threatening, and is marred only by an almost inaudible cough in the background (it's a 'live' performance and there's always one!).

The last, in atypically decent sound, is the gem of the series, brilliantly evoking the gutsy leanness of Copland's idealization of the mythic American West of the pioneers.

 Aaron Copland
The first great American composer to come out of this blend of seemingly disparate elements was Aaron Copland (1900-1990), much of whose music has become beloved indeed.
Copland’s output was large -- he wrote songs, ballets, symphonies, and a host of smaller works which he categorized with descriptors like "episodes" and "sketches".
Copland sought to develop the American musical vernacular in the era of post-Wagnerianism, when excess and bombast were eschewed in favor of cleaner lines, asymmetrical melodies, and rhythmic experimentation.
