Bilu takes on the physical demands of his experiments like a workman, he manipulates them like a technician, he applies his discoveries rhythmically, like the musician he is (for more than twenty years he has played the Indian 25 stringed sarod and still calls himself a student).
It is an early indicator of Bilu’s combined love of music and art: rhythm, form and colour saturating each other in an abstract polyphony that already wants to leave the flat surface and enter the 3-dimensional zone of his later ‘paintings’.
Bilu had made a dazzling sculptural maquette, life size but minuscule compared to the vision he fully intended.

The group was called BILU, an acronym based on a verse from Isaiah (2:5), "Beit Ya'akov Lekhu Ve-nelkha/Let the house of Jacob go!" BILU's founders believed that the time had come for Jews not only to live in Israel, but to make their living there as well.
Although the BILU movement, failed completely its vision of Jewishcooperative farms was carried out very successfully a few decades later by the kibbutz and moshav movements.
Ever since, the BILU dream of Jews living and supporting themselves in their own homeland has been regarded as one of the important forerunners of the international Zionist movement which Theodor Herzl organized fifteen years later.

The events of the past are told by a dispassionate third-person narrator, but Bruno, the adolescent son of a Jewish family and its only survivor, narrates his own story from the perspective of many years later,...

In addition to these traditional religious Jewish communities, known as the Old Yishuv, the second half of the 19th century saw a new kind of Jewish immigrant, prevalently secular left-wing socialists who aimed to reclaim the land by working on it.
Mikveh Israel was founded in 1870 by Alliance Israelite Universelle, followed by Petah Tikva (1878), Rishon LeZion (1882), and other agricultural communities founded by the members of Bilu and Hovevei Zion.
This version of the statutes was drafted in Constantinople by the members of the Central Bureau of BILU (the name is derived from the Hebrew abbreviation of Isaiah 2:5 -- "O House of Jacob, come let us go").
They were written in September 1882, shortly after their arrival there from Russia, and after the first members had already come to Eretz Israel.
