 BinHex - a Whatis.com definition
BinHex is a utility for converting (encoding) Macintosh files into files that will travel well on networks either as files or e-mail attachments.
Like Uuencode, BinHex encodes a file from its 8-bit binary or bit-stream representation into a 7-bit ASCII set of text characters.
BinHex specifically handles both resource and data forks in Macintosh files (which Uuencode doesn't).

RFC 1741 (rfc1741) - MIME Content Type for BinHex Encoded Files
BinHex BinHex 4.0 is a propular means of encoding Macintosh files for archiving on non-Macintosh file systems and for transmission via Internet mail.
Even though the BinHex encoding consists of characters which are not the same as those used in Base64 (those regarded as safe according to RFC-1521 [BORE93]) a transportation encoding should not be done.
Even though a BinHex file includes the original Macintosh filename, it is recommended that a name parameter be included on the Content- Type header to give the recipient a hint as to what file is attached.

 BinHex Format Standard
The BinHex standard also specifies that the first and last character of the data stream should be a colon (:).
Most classical binhexed files only have this first comment line, followed by a carriage return and a line feed (and only one pair of those).
It allows the user to know what is in a binhexed file without having to decode it first (Macintosh real name, file signature, size of the data fork, size of the resource fork).

 NI - BinHex Info
BinHex encoding converts an 8-bit file into a 7-bit format, similar to uuencoding.
BinHex format preserves file attributes, as well as Macintosh resource forks, and includes CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check) error-checking.
In the meantime, the fact is that BinHex is ubiquitous and won't be disappearing anytime soon, so whether it is "preferred" or not is, for the most part, a moot point.

I then wrote BinHex 2.0, which encoded 6 bits per character instead of four, extended the checksum from 8 bits to 16 bits, but retained backward compatibility with the previous format and changed the extension from.hex to.hcx (c for compact).
I changed the extension to.hqx and called the new version BinHex 4.0 to not confuse anybody (the BASIC version was called 3.0).
About a year later, I was part of the team that created the MacBinary format and wrote BinHex 5.0 to support it.

 Convert::BinHex
BinHex is a format used by Macintosh for transporting Mac files safely through electronic mail, as short-lined, 7-bit, semi-compressed data streams.
Because of the complications in storing different parts of a Macintosh file in a non-Macintosh filesystem that only handles consecutive data in one part, it is common to convert the Macintosh file into some other format before transferring it over the network.
That means that the first nonwhite characters encountered must be the binhex'ed data.

BinHex is the Mac(intosh) 'equivalent' of UU encoding or MIME, a BinHex file incorporates all the information (file creation and modification dates, creator, type, e.t.c.) about the file (and any resource fork associated with it).
Trim the BinHexed file down to the '(This file' bit and 'attach' it to a email sent to a colleague who uses a Mac emailer which *should* recognise and decode the file, I got this to work with someone using 'Eudora', it might work for you too.
