ccording to documents dating back to the latter part of the 16th century the people who inhabited the island of Negros were called by the Spaniards as the Pintados, because the men tattoo their bodies with very beautiful designs and figures, and the Negritos (Agtas).
The Pintados who were later also called Bisayans were divided into three linguistic groups: the Hegisena who lived along the coast; the Haraya who lived in the plains near rivers; and the Ignine who lived in the highlands.
The legend explains the lingustic divisions in Panay and Negros which is still true today.
