Binaural recording - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Binaural recording is a method of recording audio which uses a special microphone arrangement.
The term "binaural" has often been confused as a synonym for the word "stereo", and this is partially due to a large amount of misuse in the mid-1950s by the recording industry, as a marketing buzzword.
The first binaural unit was an array of carbon telephone microphones installed along the front edge of the Opera Garnier.

Best Pearl Jam album since Vs. | Binaural | Pearl Jam
All in all, this album to me was much heavier and had a greater variety of great songs than any of their previous three albums(which are all great in themselves).
That's not to say the album doesn't have its harder sometimes punk rocking moments like with 'Grievance' or 'Breakerfall' but on the whole the album is reflective and impacts on the senses in an undescribable fashion.
Many probably forget (non-fans who happen to own this album can be excused from this) that the Pearl Jam always look for a new direction every album and really this album, with its unique style, is one they had to make - fans especially must remember that this band have experimentation at their core.

Pearl Jam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Their debut album, Apple was released in 1990, but tragically, Wood would not be around to see it, as he died of a heroin overdose in March of that year.
A further 72 albums were released from the 2003 tour, and Pearl Jam continued to release more of their "bootlegs" on subsequent tours, although they pared down the number of concerts offered considerably.
The album featured a much more folk-based and experimental sound, evident in the presence of keyboard player and un-official band member Boom Gaspar on songs such as "Love Boat Captain." The track entitled "Arc" was recorded as a vocal tribute to the nine people who died at the Roskilde Festival in June 2000.

Binaural is Pearl Jam's weirdest album since Vitalogy-- even weirder than No Code, because No Code's restlessly experimental weirdness had obvious method to the madness, a certain brilliance behind every spoken word breakdown or tribal drumbeat.
It's not like it would have interrupted the flow: Binaural doesn't maintain much of a flow as is, and some strategic track-juggling would have produced a four- or five-star album _by PJ standards_.
Binaural suffers from the same problem that Ten, the band's only other subpar album, suffered from: some of the best songs were left off the record.

 Pearl Jam Album Reviews
But the album’s true hero is singer Eddie Vedder, a previously unknown former gas station attendant whose impassioned vocal performances and phenomenal voice would make him a reluctant superstar and give these good songs the edge to truly make them great.
This is also true of Binaural, as several mid-tempo musings on the album’s second side are a tad too low-key (the word lifeless comes to mind), and Pearl Jam could’ve tightened up some songs or at least upped the energy quotient in the absence of any attempt at humor.
Still, delivering a consistently very good album 15 years into a career after a four year hiatus is an impressive achievement, as Pearl Jam remain a very relevant proposition even though they long ago left behind their status as multi-million selling superstars.

The first single from Binaural was the next track, "Nothing As It Seems." For the first time on the album, producer Tchad Blake emerges with a very noticable new sound for the band.
For this song, Mike's guitar amp was placed in the bathroom with the door closed and miked binaurally from the main recording space while he listened on headphones.
While the album was produced by Tchad Blake and Pearl Jam, it was mixed by Tchad Blake and Brendan O'Brien, with Blake taking the slower songs and O'Brien on the faster songs.

Rolling Stone : Binaural : Review
Binaural is a warts-and-all album; it has grabbers, songs that sink in slowly and a few absolute duds (e.g., "Light Years").
Binaural doesn't try to be a big statement or any kind of last word, just the latest batch of obsessions from a band that's still restless.
On their first album, they were nobodies with a gift for folk-rock hooks and songs that veered uncomfortably close to darker impulses, like the not-for-wife-beaters hit "Push." Now, with a position to protect, the band goes over the top.

Pearl Jam’s debut album, Ten, helped upend the manicured niceness of the ‘80s by making music that was emotionally naked in both its message and delivery.
Yet the band has also shown it is willing to test different styles and genres; its biggest selling single to date was the 1999 release of “Last Kiss,” a heartfelt remake of a tragic pop song written by Wayne Cochran and popularized by J. Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers in 1964.
But Binaural lacks both the intensity and passion of the band's previous work for it to be considered a classic.

Which isn't to say Binaural lacks the core Pearl Jam virtues: awe-inspiring live muscularity, determinedly unfashionable riffs and the achingly true-hearted Eddie Vedder's decade-defining howl and piled-high baggage of guilt, sincerity and humility which, perhaps alone in his line of work, he actually means.
