University of Delaware Library: Forging a Collection
In the summer of 1840, booksellers and collectors throughout Europe received a catalog describing a remarkable book collection which would shortly be sold at auction in a sale to be held on August 10, 1840, in Binche, a small town in the southwest of Belgium.
As the date of the auction drew near, bibliophiles from all over Europe descended upon Binche and quickly sought out the offices of Mâitre Mourlon, notary, 9 rue de l'Église, where the historic sale was scheduled to take place.
They also learned that Binche had no street by the name of rue de l'Église and the late Count himself was unknown to the townspeople.

Before this period of extreme asceticism, Binche lets its hair down for some memorable merrymaking in a festival known in French as as "carnaval" (from the Latin for 'carne,' meat,' and 'levare,' to remove or raise).
Today, Binche is mainly a working-class town, though its royal origins can still be seen in the 12th and 14th century ramparts, with their some 27 towers, that have miraculously survived and are quite unusual in Belgium.
In addition, the Binche gilles are never allowed to leave their city to partake in pageants elsewhere, the only exception being the 1958 world exposition when they came to Brussels.

Each year during the three days preceding Lent, the medieval town of Binche in Belgium's French-speaking Wallonia region hosts a jovial carnival celebration that brings together the townspeople and attracts throngs of foreign visitors.
Its international popularity was established in the 19th century when it acquired the format and principal features that characterise it today, in particular the distinctive masks, accessories, instruments, the balls and special events.
Foremost among these are the entertaining costume balls, the Sunday public drum rehearsals and the ceremonial "dressing" of the legendary Gilles character, the emblem of both the carnival and the town of Binche.

In the absence of my Third Army Corps I desired to keep the cavalry division as much as possible as a reserve to act on my outer flank, or move in support of any threatened part of the line.
The right of the Third Division, under Gen. Hamilton, was at Mons, which formed a somewhat dangerous salient; and I directed the commander of the Second Corps to be careful not to keep the troops on this salient too long, but, if threatened seriously, to draw back the centre behind Mons.
This was supported by the artillery of both the First and Second Divisions, while the First Division took up a supporting position in the neighbourhood of Peissant.
