Binchester is approximately 8 miles south-west of Durham City and 3 miles north-east of Bishop Auckland in County Durham.
It is within a few miles of Willington, Spennymoor, Shildon, Coundon, Newton Aycliffe, Crook & Ferryhill, and is in the administrative areas of Wear Valley District & Durham County Councils.
Binchester is less than 3 miles from Binchester Roman Fort and Auckland Castle - home of the Bishop of Durham.

The Roman name for Binchester appears to be entirely Latin in origin, a compound name from the words vinea or vinum meaning 'vines' or 'wine', and via or 'road'.
Binchester was evidently (vide supra) built by the men of the Sixth Legion Victrix.
During excavations over the years at Binchester a number of animal bones have been uncovered, including those of Ox, Sheep, Goat, Pig, Red Deer and Boar; the latter two animals very likely being hunted and killed for sport, as well as to supplement the soldiers' diet.

The Binchester is working the Harvey seam at a depth of 40 fathoms, having a thickness of 3 feet 8 inches ; and the Brockwell, 4 feet 3 inches thick, at a depth of 80 fathoms, the two producing and output of 800 tons per day.
The Westerton pit adjoins the Binchester, the two being one as regards the surface.

Anscombe (1904:110), Faral (1929:142), Lot (1934:69, 195), Johnstone (1934:381), and Crawford (1935:287) all agree with the identification as Binchester, and Jackson (1945:49) admits that some manuscripts do attest the form Vinnovion, which could possibly render Guinnion in Old Welsh.
Nennius glosses the entry as "Caer Lion", which Giles (1986:30) in turn glosses as Exeter.
"Excavation at Binchester 1976-9." In Roman Frontier Studies 1979: Papers presented to the 12th International Congress of Roman Frontier Studies.
