Bingogate was a scandal that occurred during the administration of former Premier of British Columbia Michael Harcourt, involving the skimming of charity funds for use by the ruling NDP.
Although Harcourt was never implicated in the scandal, he resigned as party leader and premier in 1996, citing the principle that as the leader of the party, he was ultimately responsible for any misconduct in his government even if it did not directly involve him.

An editorial concerning a criminal conviction of the Nanaimo Commonwealth Holding Society (Bingogate) had mistakenly identified Jim Fulton as the Treasurer of that Society in place of Dave Stupich, another high-profile member of the NDP.
The court found that the paper had not made "timely" or "appropriate" attempts to reach Fulton, nor had it investigated his involvement in Bingogate by other means.
Hopefully this aspect of the case will be contained to its facts, i.e., the circumstance that Fulton’s utter lack of involvement in Bingogate "could easily" have been established if the paper had attempted to contact "a knowledgeable independent source".

This marked the first time that the B.C. had been in power since 1975.
He resigned as premier in 1995 as the result of "Bingogate", in which NDP insiders used money raised by a charity bingo to fund the party.
It was not believed that Harcourt had anything to do with the scandal, but he took responsibility for it.

Harcourt's government seemed immune to the scandals that plagued Ontario's NDP government under Bob RAE and BC remained one of the few areas of economic growth in the country.
Harcourt was able to achieve much of his legislative agenda until the Bingogate scandal erupted in 1994.
Although Harcourt had no direct involvement in the scandal, he became the focus of public wrath, and under intense pressure he announced his resignation in November 1995.

It's not bingogate, the allegations are that Basi and Virk bought several properties over the years and some were grow ops which the profits were paying for some of the mortgages.
Bingogate was a few thousand trickling their way into the NDP membership fees over many years (and NDP members lost money at certain times due to NCHS debt, everyone was being scammed).
On the up side, I think paries are already moving to limit the 'instant' members, such as the numbered forms that tie the recuiter to the member for the liberals and the '90 day' rule and recruiter member number on NDP memberships.

Vancouver - Forensic auditor Ron Parks is surprised and disappointed the B.C. government has pulled the plug on the Bingogate inquiry.
Parks says." My concern as a member of the public is that there is little point in appointing public inquiries to look into such matters if the government of the day has the option of pulling the plug.
If a public inquiry is not in a position to name names it clearly can't fulfill its mandate." Parks says the Bingogate inquiry might also have resolved another issue: whether political interference hampered investigations into the Nanaimo Commonwealth Holding Society in the 1980s.

In 1995, he resigned as premier in the wake of the NDP Bingogate scandal; in which the NDP fund-raising arm was found to have skimmed charity funds raised through gambling in the 1970s and ’80s.
The knock on him was that he couldn’t make the tough decision — pick the fall guy, any fall guy, and make him pay for a scandal that had little to do with his government.
Then he slams not Gordon Campbell or the Liberals but the media and some members of the NDP and the trade union movement for their response to Bingogate.

I could probably speak for hours on that, given that it's a sordid thing that goes right back to 1992, when the class of '91 first entered these hallowed halls, and was one of the first things that the Liberal opposition dealt with.
I went on, at the time, to say: "This is a cover-up, another cover-up of this sordid mess." The sordid mess I was referring to then was Bingogate and the entire way it was handled, or mishandled.
There are 64 criminal charges in the Bingogate scandal and still no payback of the money from the NDP to the charities.
