Bioacoustics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bioacoustics also refers to the organs of hearing and to the sound production apparatus, as well as to the physiological and neurophysiological processes by which sounds are produced, received and processed.
Furthermore, bioacoustics attempts to understand the relationships between the features of the sounds an animal produces and the nature of the environment in which they are used, as well as the functions they are designed to serve.
The most recent advances in bioacoustics concern the relationships among the animals and their environment and the impact of anthropogenic noise.

Bioacoustics is a branch of zoology, strictly related to ethology, that investigates sound production and reception in animals, including man, and how animals communicate by means of sound.
Bioacoustics also concerns the organs of hearing and the sound producing apparata as well as the physiological processes by which sounds are produced and received for communication as well as for echolocation purposes.
Acoustic ecology is a branch of bioacoustics that studies the acoustic relationships among animals and their environment.

BioAcoustics is very different from music or light therapy because the sounds used are not always within the range of vocal or instrumental octaves.
BioAcoustics can be taken for credit as well as CEU credits and will soon become a certificate program that will eventually be offered as a two year allied health degree through the Nursing Program at Hocking College in Nelsonville, Ohio.

Bioacoustical studies, particularly on song learning in birds, serve both to confirm some of Lehrman’s anxieties about the term “innate,” but also to make a case that he threw out the genetic baby with the bathwater.
In the present communication, the future roles and possibilities of bioacoustics are discussed, providing some examples from the realm of environmental education and monitoring that focus on the use of natural sounds.
Furthermore, our basic knowledge in bioacoustics and ecology is reviewed in the light of the development of new technology and the need for the establishment of bioacoustic reference collections to serve as vouchers for bioacoustic research.
