Topic: Biogenic theory

 Thomas Gold
His opinion influenced the design of the American Surveyor lunar landing probes, but this precaution turned out to be unnecessary as Gold had overestimated extent to which cyclic thermal expansion and contraction would pulverise lunar surface rock.
According to Gold and others, these bacteria account for the presence of biological debris in fossil fuels, obviating the need to resort to a biogenic theory for the origin of the latter.
Most western geologists and petrologists consider Gold's theories to be implausible and believe that the biogenic theory of fossil fuel formation adequately explains all observed fossil fuel deposits.

There are two theories on the origin of fossil fuels: the mainstream biogenic theory and the abiogenic theory.
According to the biogenic theory, fossil fuels are the altered remnants of ancient plant and animal life deposited in sedimentary rocks.
When it was later discovered that all fossil fuels contain traces of biological debris, the biogenic theory gained further support because the idea that life (even microbial life) could exist at the depths at which petroleum had been found seemed even less plausible.

The burning of fossil fuels by humans is their major source of emissions of carbon dioxide which is one of the greenhouse gases that is believed to contribute to global warming.
There are two theories on the origin of fossil fuels: the biogenic theory and the abiogenic theory.
The biogenic theory was favored early because in the late 19th century it was believed that the Earth was extremely hot (possibly molten rock) during its formation.

Abiogenic Petroleum Origin - Above Top Secret Conspiracy Community
Although this theory has support by a large minority of geologists in Russia, where it was intensively developed in the 1950s and 1960s, it has only recently begun to receive attention in the West, where the biogenic theory is still believed by the vast majority of petroleum geologists.
One prediction of this theory is that other planets of the Solar system or their moons have large petroleum oceans, either from hydrocarbons present at the formation of the Solar system, or subsequent chemical reactions.

Recapitulation theory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The theory of recapitulation, also called the biogenetic law or ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny, is a theory in biology which attempts to explain apparent similarities between humans and other animals.
Because the actual scientific theory is difficult to explain in layman's terms, expressions of doubt about evolution that point to the flaws in Haeckel's arguments typically go unchallenged in popular media.
Although Haeckel's specific form of recapitulation theory is now discredited among biologists, it did have a strong impact in social and educational theories of the late 19th century.

Ernst Haeckel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He supported the theory with embryo drawings that have since been shown to be oversimplified and in part inaccurate, and the theory is now considered an oversimplification of quite complicated relationships.
Haeckel was also known for his "biogenic theory", in which he suggested that the development of races paralleled the development of individuals.
Although Haeckel's ideas are important to the history of evolutionary theory, and he was a competent invertebrate anatomist most famous for his work on radiolaria, many speculative concepts that he championed are now considered incorrect.

 The 'Abiotic Oil' Controversy
The abiotic theory holds that there must therefore be nearly limitless pools of liquid primordial hydrocarbons at great depths on Earth, pools that slowly replenish the reservoirs that conventional oil drillers tap.
Thus even if the abiotic theory does eventually prove to be partially or wholly scientifically valid (and that is a rather big "if"), it might have little or no practical consequence in terms of oil depletion and the imminent global oil production peak.
The C-12 to C-13 ratio is a generally observed property of petroleum and is predicted by the biotic theory; it is not merely an occasional aberration.

According to this theory, fuel oil was formed from the decayed remains of prehistoric marine animals and terrestrial plants.
This abiogenic theory is fascinating in that is proports that if the right gaseous materials were in the atmosphere and the right materials were in the water, and somehow these two entities can come together, it is inevitable that a living cell will form from it.
This theory suggests that large amounts of carbon exist naturally in the planet, some in the form of hydrocarbons.

 Stanley Kurtz on NRO
Since, according to the biogenic amine theory, happiness is ultimately just a matter of brain biochemistry, there can be nothing troubling about the use of psychotropic drugs to treat even ordinary human sadness.
The biogenic amine theory is a way of distracting ourselves from that uncomfortable truth — a way of allowing doctors and patients to deny that by prescribing and taking drugs, we are running away from our troubles (and ourselves), or encouraging others to do so.
So, although Dworkin himself doesn't quite put it this way, the theory of chemically based happiness is a sort of religion — a central myth in a "scientifically" based world-view that explains and treats unhappiness in religion's stead.

Today, the biogenic theory, which recognizes that all petroleum found in our planet is derived from biological precursors, is well proved and supported by laboratory experiments, in which petroleum composition is shown to reflect that of oil generated from kerogen by pyrolysis.
This “biogenic theory” of oil and gas formation is the only theory consistent with all of the observations, analytical data, scientific facts, and experimental results relating to the natural process of oil and gas formation.
This “biogenic theory” of oil and gas origin subsequently led to the “generative basin” concept and eventually to the “petroleum system” paradigm that is widely used with great success by the petroleum industry today.

 Abiogenic Gas Debate 11:2002 EXPLORER
Organizers said the conference is designed to provide an opportunity to present the hypothesis, evidence and data for an organic origin of petroleum and for an abiogenic origin of petroleum through oral and poster sessions, with ample time for discussion and debate.
"The modern, organic theory of the origin of petroleum states that a portion of the lipid fraction of micro-organisms deposited in anaerobic sediments is the original source of petroleum," he said.
Gold most recently explained his theories of the origin of petroleum in his 1999 book The Deep Hot Biosphere, which presents the view that life on Earth exists to a depth of many miles.

Gold firmly believed that his theory accounted for a range of anomalies, such as the presence of helium in oil (although it has no affinity with organic material) and the presence of magnetite in oil.
The biogenic theory of oil led to the belief that it would eventually 'run out', which is what is keeping oil prices artificially high.

As more and more studies of oil were carried out, the abiotic hypothesis was abandoned in the early 20th century and the biogenic theory became the standard explanation for the origin of oil.
But the idea that the biogenic theory is a hoax has been repeated so often in forums and blogs that it has gained a lot of ground and it has taken on the appearance of an obvious fact for some people.
The laboratory demonstration of all the steps of the standard biogenic theory was done in a series of studies carried out by the American Petroleum Institute (API) in the 1930s -1940s.

Oil - what it is and related products
There are two theories that explain how oil is formed in the earth.
The first is the biogenic theory, which states that oil develops over time from compression of organic material such as prehistoric animals and vegetation.
Another theory, called the abiogenic theory, states that oil is created by the earth in a natural process and that there is vast amounts of oil deep within the earth.

Gold's theory of oil formation, which he expounded in a book entitled The Deep Hot Biosphere, is that hydrogen and carbon, under high temperatures and pressures found in the mantle during the formation of the Earth, form hydrocarbon molecules which have gradually leaked up to the surface through cracks in rocks.
The validity of the abiotic oil theory is of great importance to the peak oil debate, if for no other reason than that the abiotic theory is increasingly being cited by opponents of peak oil as 'proof' that we will never run out of oil.
The theory of abiotic oil is a convenient place to hang false hopes for those who do not understand the concepts of peak oil and for those who choose not to believe it.
