To avoid violating Edison's motion picture patents, Biograph cameras from 1895 used a large-format film 2-23/32 inches (68mm) wide, with an image area of 2 by 2-1/2 inches, instead of Edison's 35mm format.
Among Biograph's other accomplishments were being the first producers to film the Pope at the Vatican (1896); and the first company to shoot a movie specifically in Hollywood, D.W. Griffith's In Old California (1910).
The Biograph Co. released its last new feature-length films in 1915, its last new short films in 1916, and was dissolved by 1929.

Frank Marion had been the sales manager at Biograph Studios and Samuel Long was the manager of the Biograph production facility at Hoboken, New Jersey.
The partners were able to lure general manager and director Sidney Olcott away from Biograph who eventually became the Kalem Company's president and was rewarded with one share of its stock.
Kalem was also one of the first studios to regularly film year-round by setting up facilities in Florida during the winter.

In 1893, Thomas Edison built the first movie studio in the USA when he constructed the Black Maria, a tarpaper-covered structure near his laboratories in West Orange, New Jersey, and asked circus, vaudeville and dramatic actors to perform for the camera.
The first movie studio in the Hollywood area was Nestor Studios, which was opened in 1911 by Al Christie for David Horsley.
With the end of "the Studios" and the continued incursion of television into the audience for film, more and more companies became simply management structures which put together artistic teams on a project-by-project basis, usually renting space from some of the surviving studios, which is still the norm today.
