The transesterification process is the reaction of a triglyceride (fat/oil) with an bioalcohol to form esters and glycerol.
The reaction between the biolipid (fat or oil) and the alcohol is a reversible reaction so the alcohol must be added in excess to drive the reaction towards the right and ensure complete conversion.
The alcohol/catalyst mix is then charged into a closed reaction vessel and the biolipid (vegetable or animal oil or fat) is added.

 Pulmonary Neurobiology Laboratory
Biolipids as modulators of synaptic transmission in the dorsal horn
The collaborative project uses a sophisticated combination of behavioral analysis, electrophysiology, imaging and neuronal tracing techniques, multiple-labeling 3D confocal microscopy and molecular biology to determine the sources and targets of bioactive sphingolipids in the dorsal root ganglion and the superficial laminae of the dorsal horn of mice.
In particular, we will characterize the localization of biolipid synthesis and receptors as well as the effects of the biolipid, S1P, on glutamatergic neurons and unmyelinated C-fibre neurons labeled for neuropeptides (substance P and calcitonin gene-related peptide) or the lectin, IB4.

 geobiology @ mit
Molecular fossils that are stable under geologic condition mostly originate from lipids that were once functioning.
Under the correct diagenetic conditions, these functionalized biolipids are reduced to their hydrocarbon skeletons in sedimentary environments.
As you see in the picture to the right, after burial and millions of years of abuse and pressure, the original biolipid (poor guy) loses some of its individuality, namely the hydroxyl (OH) groups on the chain.

Transesterification - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The name "biodiesel" has been given to transesterified vegetable oil to describe its use as a diesel fuel.
It was patented in the U.S. in the 1940s by Colgate, though biolipid transesterification may have been discovered much earlier.
In the 1940s, researchers were looking for a method to more readily produce glycerine, which was used to produce explosives for World War II.

The biolipids must be processed so that impurities are removed and hydrocarbons are separated from glycerol.
In some procedures, biolipid processing is accomplished by transesterification through methanol and lye treatment.
Although treated biodiesel can mix with conventional diesel due to similar viscosity and polarity, biodiesel differs from conventional diesel fuel in two important ways.
