Biology and sexual orientation Totally Explained
Most life-scientists today agree that sexual orientation is probably the result of complex interactions of environmental, cognitive/psychological and biological factors.
Sexual practices that significantly reduce the frequency of heterosexual intercourse also significantly decrease the chances of successful reproduction, and for this reason, they'd appear to be maladaptive in an evolutionary context following a simple Darwinian model of Natural Selection—on the assumption that homosexuality would reduce this frequency.
Daryl Bem, a social psychologist at Cornell University, has theorized that the influence of biological factors on sexual orientation may be mediated by experiences in childhood.

Biology and sexual orientation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Biology and sexual orientation is the concept in industrialized societies that there is, at least in part, a biological basis for sexual orientation.
The main biological determinants of sexual orientation are generally thought to be genetic and hormonal, with some writers suggesting either one or the other are the key factor, and many suggesting that both play a role.
The view that post-natal environmental influence are the sole determinant of sexual orientation and gender was prominent in the 20th century, but is less widely held in the 21st century.

Sexual orientation is fundamental to evolution and shifts from the species-typical pattern of heterosexuality may represent biological variations.
Sexual orientation is characterised by a bipolar distribution and is related to fraternal birth order in males.

Sexual Orientation: In The Brain, Study Finds Brain Differences In Reaction To Testosterone Scent - CBS News
Witelson, who was not part of the research team that conducted the study, said the findings show a biological involvement in sexual orientation.
The study, published in Tuesday's issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, was done by researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.
But when confronted by a chemical from testosterone, the male hormone, portions of the brains active in sexual activity were activated in straight women and in gay men, but not in straight men, the researchers found.

The Only Question That Matters: Do People Choose Their Sexual Orientation?
But—surprise—with sexual orientation, both twins share the trait homosexuality more often than they do left-handedness—yet no one would claim this is evidence that left-handedness is a "chosen alternative lifestyle" because left-handedness isn't seen as a moral issue—any more.
Behavior isn't sexual orientation, and the difference between behavior and orientation is as obvious as lying: When you tell a lie, you know perfectly well what the truth is inside; if you felt you were able to tell the truth you'd behave differently and say different things.
And for those people who can't comprehend sexual orientation, who think sexual orientation is somehow weirdly "chosen," who are terrified of the empirical, clinical fact that homosexuals and left-handed people simply have biological givens, the impact of this research is, unfortunately, terrifying.

Sexual orientation is different from sexual behavior because it refers to feelings and self-concept.
There are numerous theories about the origins of a person's sexual orientation; most scientists today agree that sexual orientation is most likely the result of a complex interaction of environmental, cognitive and biological factors.

New Theory Of Sexual Orientation Could Help Resolve Nature-Nurture Debate
Lifelong sexual orientations can be traced to childhood preferences for sex-typical or sex-atypical activities and peers, suggests Daryl J. Bem, Cornell professor of psychology.
Rather, biology can be partially responsible for what he calls childhood temperaments, and youngsters' temperaments predispose them to enjoy some activities more than others during the critical, life course-setting period.
I believe that sexual orientation per se is not coded in genetics, in brain neuroanatomy or in prenatal hormones.

Laura Allen and Roger Gorski (1992) also concluded that brain anatomy influences sexual orientation after discovering that a section of the anterior commissure (the fibers that, like the corpus callosum, connect right and left hemispheres) is one-third larger in homosexual men than in heterosexual men.
It does, however, raise the troubling possibility that genetic markers of sexual orientation could someday be identified through fetal testing, and a fetus could be aborted simply for being predisposed to an unwanted orientation.

Hormones In The Womb Affect Sexual Orientation
The level of male hormones in the womb can influence an unborn child's future sexual orientation, according to new research from a University of California, Berkeley, professor who used an unusual technique ' measuring finger length - to gather evidence.
He said his findings are consistent with other, very sketchy indications that some gay men are hypermasculinized, having a greater average number of sexual partners in a lifetime than heterosexual men, higher than normal levels of testosterone circulating in the blood, and larger genitalia than heterosexual men.
As indicated by the fingers measured in his study, Breedlove said that each subsequent son is exposed to higher levels of male hormones and that, while most later-born sons are straight, the increased androgen level slightly increases the probability of a male child developing a homosexual orientation.

After all, if sexual orientation is a biologically essential category, then experience shows that in homophobic societies one cannot classify people’s orientation by either what they say or who they do.
But this throws a monkey wrench into a number of our commonest assumptions, including almost all of the current research on the biology of sexual orientation, which most often utilizes and is premised upon a discrete binary or polar model of sexual orientation, sometimes even categorically eliminating the possibility of bisexuality.
On the other hand, assuming that bisexuality is the default and most common orientation may help to explain some of the current research that has failed to discover any consistent one-to-one relationship between biology and sexual orientation, regardless of what biological factor is being isolated and studied.

The biological research seeking to uncover possible biological bases underlying sexual orientation (or directed at exploring related questions) is extensive and substantial and cannot be discussed with any degree of thoroughness in the context of this paper.
Discussions of the supposed biology of sexual orientation have tended to focus on the results of studies in three distinct fields of biology: neuroanatomy, genetics, and the study of hormones and behavior.
In the field of neuroanatomy and related areas much was made in the early '90s when Simon LeVay claimed to have uncovered substantial differences in the morphology (size and shape) of particular sections of the brains of men vs. women on the one hand, and heterosexuals vs. homosexuals on the other.

Stein claims that by applying philosophy to the study of sexual orientation, he has shed light on the subject, but it seems rather that he has muddled the issue by introducing metaphysical categories and distinctions, such as "natural kind," which are not meaningful or useful in science.
After rejecting a direct genetic basis for sexual orientation, Stein spends several chapters expressing "worries" that scientists might actually discover a genetic cause for homosexuality, thereby enabling parents to choose the orientation of their child.
