	California Plant Ecology
		Native plants of the valley grassland, coastal prairie and most other California plant communities survive because the ecosystem is a protective, closed biomass system (all the biomass in the system is conserved and recycled) based on plant community, mycorrhizal community, climate and soil types.
		California native ecosystems and the way they work (cooperation) are very different from the way the plants in a common garden grow (competition).
		California does not have highly fertile soils in any plant community (other than Riparian) unless the community is destroyed or burned because the community structure limits the nutrition of the site.

		This contextual mediation of identity in the blogosphere is analogous to online multiplayer simulated environments and presents comparable challenges faced by such environments in the construction of civil society though tends to be less beholden to single corporate owners of virtual geographies such as the Sims Alphaville or the online metropolis that is Everquest.
		Ecologies of the blogosphere are in this way inextricably interpolated into practices of space and place in offline environments.

		They seem to be remarkably common around the world, and the abundance of their DNA in coastal surface waters suggests that they can represent about 34% of the prokaryote biomass at certain times of the year.

		The results of the study show that the best situation in Africa would be to transition from biomass fuels to petroleum-based fossil fuels such as kerosene and liquid propane gas, which can prevent between 1.3 and 3.7 million premature deaths, depending on the speed of transition.
		"Most charcoal is produced in Africa by one or two guys going out in the woods, almost always without a permit and on somebody else's land, cutting down a tree or two, chopping it up, lighting it, covering it with dirt, and then hovering around it for 2-4 days while it becomes charcoal," Kammen said.
		In 2000, nearly 470 million tons of wood were consumed in homes in sub-Saharan Africa in the form of firewood and charcoal, more wood per capita than any other region in the world.

		With the development of quantitative methods for estimating the biomass, metabolic activity, nutritional status and community structure of the estuarine detrital microbiota, and the indication of marked effects on the microbiota by amphipod grazing, a detailed examination of the effects of grazing by two sympatric amphipods was conducted.
		The microbiota, which develop on Teflon squares after a 2-wk exposure in a North Florida estuary, showed, when grazed for 2 wk, significantly increased bacterial biomass (short-branched and cis-vaccenic fatty acids) and microeukaryotes (total polyenoic fatty acids).
		Melita feed on nonphotosynthetic microeukaryotes (lowered triglyceride glycerol) leaving a larger total biomass (extractable lipid phosphate), photosynthetic biomass (lipid galactose) with greater total metabolic activity estimated as the 4-h rate of phospholipid and sulfolipid synthesis.

		Despite not observing a progressive increase in the relative abundance of fungi within the microbial community toward the maximal plant biomass stage, we did detect a significant drop in fungal abundance during retrogressive succession.
		This project was concerned with looking for general patterns that occur during primary succession, and specifically changes that occur in the decomposer community as plant communities go through the "build-up" to the maximal biomass phase, and finally to the decline phase.

		Our simulations also suggested that the largest changes in the biomass of any billfish or shark group in response to any fishing strategy were only slightly greater than a doubling of biomass and, more typically, less than an 80% increase.
