		The Biomedical Primate Research Centre (BPRC) is Europe's largest primate research centre, using great apes and monkeys in animal testing and vivisection.

	Broad Press Release - Researchers Find Surprising Difference Between Human and Chimp Genomes
		The international research team consists of collaborating investigators from the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard; Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH); Harvard Medical School (HMS); the University of Oxford, UK; and the Biomedical Primate Research Centre, Netherlands.
		Working together, the research team analyzed data collected in Boston with the methods developed in Oxford and was able to identify 18 hotspots in human and three hotspots in chimp.

	The Chimpanzee Collaboratory
		Dozens of chimpanzees from a Dutch research laboratory face a housing crisis after plans for their early retirement on the Spanish coast collapsed because of residents' fears they would carry infectious diseases.
		The 39 chimps were part of a major colony living at the Biomedical Primate Research Centre in 2002 when the Dutch government banned any further testing on chimpanzees after trials already in progress ended.
		At the Dutch research centre - which was Europe's last remaining lab using chimps for research - 70 other healthy chimps have been sold or promised to seven different European zoos and animal centres of mostly high standards.

	Vivisection
		Supporters of animal research and testing allege that it usually does not require the invasive procedures implied by vivisection; however, virtually all animal experimentation culminates in the deaths of the animals involved.

		According to new research from the lab of Ted Golos, Ph.D., the presence of specialized molecules on the surface of rhesus monkey placental cells at the time of implantation provides evidence of an important role for MHC class I molecules in the establishment of a successful pregnancy.
		The nonhuman primate model also allows researchers to look at the very earliest time during pregnancy, the implantation stage, when the most critical events for the establishment of pregnancy are occurring.

	Surprising difference found between human and chimp genomes - MIT News Office
		In the Feb. 10 online issue of the journal Science, researchers from the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard report with colleagues that the locations of DNA swapping between chromosomes, known as recombination "hotspots," are nearly entirely different.
		In addition to the Broad researchers, the international research team consists of investigators from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Harvard Medical School (HMS), the University of Oxford, and the Biomedical Primate Research Centre in the Netherlands.

		Previous research has implied that HIV escapes the CTL response by replacing specific amino acids within regions of its own proteins that would normally be recognized by CTLs.
		The researchers tracked 10 of these regions, called epitopes, during the course of disease progression in rhesus monkeys.
		The Wisconsin Regional Primate Research Center is now developing a colony of genetically defined rhesus monkeys for more controlled AIDS research.

		A report by the coalition says the Dutch laboratory, the Biomedical Primate Research Centre at Rijswijk, keeps 112 chimpanzees and hundreds of other primates in "appalling" conditions.
		The coalition says researchers from leading UK universities, hospitals and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food are involved in experiments at the BPRC that would be illegal in the UK, which banned such research in 1997.
		Ceece says many of the centre's chimpanzees were bred for research on Aids, but are no longer wanted for it, as it says many scientists think they are of little use.

		He stated, "In recent years it has become clear that the need for the use of chimpanzees for research into malaria and HIV has rapidly diminished and is of limited importance.
		Dutch zoos, or other European research facilities, may attempt to obtain them and this could be of financial benefit to the government.
		CEECE has offered its assistance to rehome the primates at facilities which replicate as close as possible the conditions in which they would live in the wild.
