Engines of Creation - K. Eric Drexler : Chapter 9   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
The first step of the hypothetical biostasis procedure that I described in Chapter 7 involved simple molecular devices able to enter cells, block their molecular machinery, and tie structures together with stabilizing cross-links.
To reverse this form of biostasis, cell repair machines will be programmed to remove the glassy protectant and the glutaraldehyde cross-links and then repair and replace molecules, thus restoring cells, tissues, and organs to working order.
If terminal illness without biostasis is a nightmare today, consider surgery without anesthesia in the days of our ancestors: the knife slicing through flesh, the blood flowing, the saw grating on the bone of a conscious patient.

Chapter 2: The Terminus of the Self
In the case of biostasis, the deanimate person's physical embodiment is stabilized, by locking their constituent molecules in place at extremely low temperatures or by chemical fixation.
Biostasis is thus a sub-category of deanimate; biostatic persons are deanimate persons whose dissolution has been arrested (before reaching a critical stage).
While biostasis preserves a person's original physical form in a static state, being inactivate involves someone persisting in the form of stored information specifying the structure of the person's body (or just their brain) without that body persisting.

Embracing the Paradigm Shift: The Preparation
Biostasis - preservation of a biological being's living or dead body so as to hold that body in a non-living, non-changing state for extended periods of time, allowing that body to be brought back to life at a later date after any necessary repairs have been performed.
Biostasis is certainly no worse than lying in a bed, slowly dying, not really living at all, or putting your faith in a false religion in order to survive death.
The biggest problems with biostasis isn't that people are wasting their money on something that won't work, or that they are doing something immoral by opting for biostasis; it's the social and legal issues that surround the practice of biostasis.

 BASIC NEURON PHYSIOLOGY
The essential goal of biostasis is to preserve the physiological basis of mind and personal identity in a stable, unchanging form for at least a few hundred years.
But whether the method of preservation is cryonics, desiccation or chemical infusion, biostasis cannot be assured when there is little knowledge of the structures that form the basis of what it is we are trying to preserve.
It would be sufficient to place a person into biostasis, bring the person out of biostasis, and demonstrate that all of the person's faculties are intact.

Provided it is on record that care was taken in preparing a corpse for its long journey to the future such a corpse will be given a high priority in the line up for the use of such technology.
Far from being a desperate last ditch effort on the part of the terminally ill patient to "save" his life, investing in biostasis is in fact an unexpectedly reliable means for insuring a second chance at life.

Reversible biostasis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
This assumes that the method above constitutes the sole definition of "reversible biostasis research", which is precisely the point at issue.
Struggling for years, possibly decades, to break the high-sub-zero barrier for whole organisms may not be commercially very rewarding, and you have to be a starry-eyed optimist indeed to pour hundreds of millions of dollars into somethimg with little payoff for decades.
In other words, "reversible biostasis research" on the scale needed to solve the problem will probably never get done unless it goes the individual organ route.

 Cryonics Europe
Biostasis, a very high tech service, has grown out of what was once called "cryonics".
Today, Alcor is the only organization that can offer vitrification, an advanced biostasis technology that is currently only available for neuro-patients (for whom current day technologies such as stem cell technology, genetic engineering, therapeutic cloning, and future technologies like nanomedicine will be used to create younger, stronger, healthier, and more productive bodies).
It also means that the distances (and resulting time delays) experienced when a member lives at a distance, are a major limitation on the ability to make these advances available to members at a distance.
