Palaeos Ecology : Biota : The Cambrian evolutionary biota
This is a brief introduction to the classic biota of the Cambrian.

Ecology is the study of organisms and their dwellings.
You could study forest ecology, urban ecology, or even the ecology of the Johnson's household - with their permission, of course.
In all cases you are considering the interaction of the living organisms - the biota - with their nonliving environment.

AstroecologyInteractions between Extraterrestrial Environments and Biota   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Ecology concerns the interactions of the biota with its environment.
Incorporating all the biologically useable material in the community of life (biota), and making all life sentient, will maximize cognitive life (their total interactive community may be called "cognota") or post-human life in habitable space and time in the universe.
To examine the ecology of these objects, the experiments will need to be extended to organisms that can live without oxygen under anaerobic conditions, and possibly also in environments with extreme conditions of temperature, salinity and water content that they may find in these new environments.

From sparse desert communities growing in the region’s rugged canyons to alpine tundra found atop the highest peaks, the biota of the Colorado Plateau is exceptionally diverse.
Though ongoing natural processes such as succession and climate change continue to alter the region's biota, the rapid changes seen today due to human activities are unprecedented in their impacts on the biota of the Colorado Plateau.
The biota of the Colorado Plateau during the middle (50,000-27,500 B.P.) and late (27,500-14,000 B.P.) Wisconsin time periods was dramatically different from that seen today.

For example, geochemists define the biosphere as being the total sum of living organisms (the "biomass" or "biota" as referred to by biologists and ecologists).
In ecology, a biome is a major regional group of distinctive plant and animal communities best adapted to the region's physical environment.
Ecology is the branch of science that studies the distribution and interactions between living things and between living things and the physical environment.

It is very different, however, than some of the other ecology programs listed here in that it lets you mix and match classical ecological equations with each other to make systems of equations.
The user interface for Biota is particularly well-designed, given the complexity of the program, and lets you easily change equations and parameters through pop-up menus, dialogs, and maps of the different areas.
So I think this program would best be used in more advanced ecology courses, where either you want students to be able to play with models but do not want to use a full-blown modelling program such as Stella or Mathematica, or you want to be able to play with spatially-explicit models.

 Ecosystemic Life Hypothesis
I sought a scientifically-based, quantitative measure of soil biota by which to place a given agricultural soil on a continuum of "good" to "bad" health.
While I saw how this worked for streams and their biota, the reference site approach was problematic for agricultural systems because of the major differences in disturbance, inputs, and biodiversity between natural and highly managed systems.
One potential avenue for clarification is to move to the framework of evolution, arguably the strongest basis for integration of biology and ecology.
